On Tuesday, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari denied considering a diesel vehicle tax.
The minister tweeted, “Media reports suggesting an additional 10% GST on diesel vehicle sales must be clarified.” Importantly, the government is not considering this proposal. To achieve Carbon Net Zero by 2070, reduce diesel air pollution, and keep up with rapid automobile sales growth, we must actively embrace cleaner and greener alternative fuels. Cheap, local, and pollution-free fuels should be imported.”
Previous reports suggest the Union government will tax diesel engines by 10% to reduce air pollution.
BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers will be banned in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar if the AQI exceeds 400 to reduce air pollution.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a statutory body established by an Act in 2021, amended the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) first notified in 2017 last July to ensure proactive implementation of anti-air pollution measures based on three-day forecasts. After pollution reached a certain level, authorities banned construction, demolition, high-emission vehicle entry, and coal and firewood use.
