AI regulation to be legislated in India soon

The Indian government is reportedly planning to legislate on artificial intelligence regulation. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, said the process might begin after the general election. India is developing a regulatory framework to manage technology-related challenges. The Indian government advised tech companies to get “explicit permission” before using untested or unreliable AI models a month earlier.

The advise was reversed after startup concerns, and companies were instructed to display labels stating “possible inherent fallibility or unreliability of the output generated”.

Ashwini Vaishnaw told the media about the government’s AI regulation ambitions. “A self-regulatory body is one idea. We think that’s not enough. We think this regulation should be legislative. We consulted the industry. The minister stated a formal consultative procedure and legislation will follow elections.

To promote innovation and creativity, the government has announced balanced regulations. Copyright, financial, and commercial issues will be regulated.

Intellectual property preservation is another issue. Famous authors like Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Franzen, and James Patterson have written to tech companies to stop using their copyrighted work for AI model training or content creation. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for utilizing its news items without authorization to train their chatbot.

The Indian Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) wants AI model copyright protection. The next AI regulations should address these issues.
