Apple cuts back: Corporate retail employees face layoffs amid restructuring

The IT company will reduce employees in its development and preservation teams, though the specifics of the move have not yet been made public.

Apple Inc., the world’s most valuable business, which has previously shown aversion to firing people, is eliminating a limited number of posts inside its corporate retail teams as part of a cost-cutting effort.

Prior to the epidemic, the tech titan reduced corporate positions by laying off a couple hundred employees from its self-driving vehicle section.

A few heads would be rolled in the development and preservation teams, according to the article. But, the IT behemoth has yet to make the announcement public. The impacted sectors are staffed by employees who are in charge of the building and maintenance of Apple retail shops and other facilities across the world.

It is unclear how many staff will be asked to leave, although the number is thought to be minimal. Apple has so far refrained from laying off staff, despite the fact that its competitors are doing so in order to “revitalise” their financial fortunes through cost cutting.

Apple is also portraying the move as a process of simplification rather than layoffs. Apple executives are attempting to persuade employees that the adjustments are intended to enhance store maintenance worldwide. Officials are also attempting to calm anxieties by promising assistance.

Before, the iPhone manufacturer avoided employing executives who had departed in droves. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook’s loyal lieutenants have left the company in recent years, creating hurdles to day-to-day operations. Despite the departure of high-valued senior executives, Apple did not hire specialists to fill open positions.

The tech titan withheld incentives. It cut expenditures and reduced the size of its contractor personnel, which included on-contract engineers, recruiters, and security guards.

Apple, on the other hand, asked employees in such groups if they would be able to reapply for many roles identical to their previous ones. Individuals who do not accept a new position will receive up to four months’ pay, according to the newspaper.

The company is also terminating certain supervisors, however such individuals may be rehired as “individual contributors.” They may not be compensated in the same way. Certain employees are exempt and will be able to maintain their employment without having to reapply.

According to estimates, Apple employed 164,000 employees at the conclusion of its fiscal year in September. The corporation tackled spending with prudence in order to avoid incurring additional fees. It did not grow its employees during the epidemic, as other large IT businesses did, avoiding the need for huge layoffs.

The iPhone manufacturer has not cut headcounts at a time when competitors including Apple Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google have cut tens of thousands of positions across the board.
