A few months ago, Rohit Sharma’s Test career seemed to be hanging by a thread. In a shocking move, he dropped himself from India’s playing XI during the fifth Test against Australia after a string of poor performances. Speculation swirled about his future in red-ball cricket, with many questioning whether his days as a Test cricketer were numbered.
Fast forward to today, and the narrative has taken a dramatic turn. According to reports, the BCCI and the selection committee have given Rohit their full backing to continue as Team India’s captain for the highly anticipated five-match Test tour of England later this year.
His leadership in the recent Champions Trophy in Dubai played a key role in this decision. Under his captaincy, India remained unbeaten, securing another ICC title and reinforcing the belief that Rohit is the “right candidate” to lead India in what will be a grueling series that also marks the beginning of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle (2025-27).
“He (Rohit) has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source told.
Despite persistent rumors about his retirement, the 37-year-old has repeatedly dismissed them. After India’s triumph over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final, he made it clear that he has no plans to step away from ODIs just yet.
“Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open,” Rohit told the ICC.
While the 2027 World Cup remains uncertain, what’s crystal clear is that Rohit Sharma will continue leading India in Test cricket, with the England tour, starting June 20, set to be his next big challenge.
