BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla expressed his disapproval of third umpire Saikat Sharfuddoula’s decision to dismiss Yashasvi Jaiswal during the final day of the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne. Shukla stated that the Indian opener was “clearly not out” and questioned the basis of the contentious ruling.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was batting on 84, faced a short delivery from Australian skipper Pat Cummins. Attempting a hook shot, he appeared cramped for room as wicketkeeper Alex Carey completed a tumbling catch down the leg side. The Australian team immediately appealed, but on-field umpire Joel Wilson turned it down.
Australia opted for a DRS review, and despite the Snicko showing no evidence of an edge, third umpire Sharfuddoula overturned the on-field decision, citing a visible deflection as sufficient evidence to declare Jaiswal out.
Rajeev Shukla took to X to criticize the decision, saying: “Yashasvi Jaiswal was clearly not out. The third umpire should have taken note of what the technology suggested. When overruling the field umpire, the third umpire must have solid reasons.”
