Physician-researchers at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) tested Open AI’s Chat-GPT 4 to see how well it could identify difficult medical issues. The results revealed that Chat-GPT 4 identified the correct diagnosis among its potential diagnoses in two-thirds of problematic cases and effectively supplied the correct diagnosis in roughly 40% of cases. In response to a comment on the study’s motivation, Adam Rodman, co-director of the Innovations in Media and Education Delivery (iMED) Initiative at BIDMC, noted that recent developments in artificial intelligence have produced generative AI models with extremely skilled text-based responses, particularly in standardized medical exams. The goal of the study was to determine whether a generative model could “think” like a doctor and successfully resolve complex diagnostic situations that were utilized for teaching. Chat-GPT 4 performed better than anticipated, offering encouraging information about its possible medicinal uses.
The researchers used clinicopathological case conferences (CPCs), which are complicated patient cases including pertinent clinical and laboratory data, imaging investigations, and histopathological findings for teaching purposes, to assess the chatbot’s diagnostic capabilities. In 39% of the 70 CPC cases, the AI accurately matched the final CPC diagnosis. Furthermore, the final CPC diagnosis was included in 64% of instances in the AI’s differential, which is a list of potential diagnoses based on a patient’s symptoms, medical history, clinical findings, and test outcomes.
Although chatbots cannot replace the knowledge of skilled medical experts, Zahir Kanjee, the study’s first author and a hospitalist at BIDMC, underlined that generative AI has promise as a possible complement to human cognition in diagnosis. It may help doctors better interpret complicated medical data and sharpen their diagnostic judgment.
