Mark Boucher, the former South African wicketkeeper-batter and current head coach of the Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL season, shared an optimistic view on Rohit Sharma’s recent form. Speaking after Mumbai’s clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Boucher highlighted Rohit’s intent and powerful strokeplay, indicating that a major innings could be on the horizon.
“Rohit Sharma took it upon himself to go after the bowlers. We saw some good old-fashioned Rohit Sharma sixes – big ones too. I liked his attitude,” Boucher remarked during his appearance on the host broadcaster’s panel.
Rohit Sharma, who scored 26 off just 16 balls including three sixes in the match against Hyderabad, hasn’t managed to notch up a half-century in six games this IPL season. This score remains his highest in the 2025 edition so far. His inconsistent form has sparked renewed debate, particularly since he had briefly silenced critics after the Champions Trophy
“He put the bowlers under pressure, created scoring opportunities. He was just past the 30-mark — a big score is coming very soon. He’s looking in that zone again,” Boucher added, confident of a turnaround.
Despite falling short of a substantial score once more, Rohit’s aggressive start gave Mumbai early momentum with the bat, setting the stage for others to build on. However, his overall numbers this season – 0, 8, 13, 17, 18, and now 26 – have been far from his usual standards, leading to his current role as an impact substitute in Hardik Pandya’s side.
For a player of Rohit’s caliber, such a run is uncharacteristic, but Boucher’s comments suggest that the veteran opener may be close to rediscovering his best.
