Facing Mohammed Shami, Rohit launched a massive six over the deep third-man boundary, a shot that marked his 100th six at the Wankhede Stadium. With this, he became the first batter ever to achieve this feat at the iconic Mumbai venue and only the fourth overall to record 100 or more sixes at a single IPL ground.
Rohit Sharma was introduced as Mumbai Indians’ impact substitute and contributed a quickfire 26 off 16 balls, which included three sixes. Though his innings was short, the landmark he achieved was significant. However, his quest for a big score this season continues, as he has repeatedly failed to convert his starts into impactful innings.
The list of players who have managed to hit over 100 sixes at a single IPL venue is short and illustrious. Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers remain the only other names on it, all having accomplished the feat at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Within the Mumbai Indians camp, the next best behind Rohit at Wankhede is Kieron Pollard, who has struck 85 sixes at the ground. Rohit’s landmark not only underscores his love affair with the Wankhede but also reaffirms his standing as one of the most prolific six-hitters in IPL history.
