When people think of milk production in India, one name often stands out—Anand, a city in Gujarat widely known as the “Milk Capital of India”. This reputation didn’t come overnight. It is deeply connected to India’s dairy revolution and the rise of one of the country’s most successful cooperative movements.

Anand became famous due to the success of Amul, a dairy brand that started as a small cooperative and grew into a nationwide name. The movement began in 1946 under the leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel and later gained strength with the guidance of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is often called the “Father of the White Revolution”. Their vision was simple yet powerful: empower local farmers by giving them control over production and distribution.

This initiative led to Operation Flood, one of the largest agricultural movements in the world. It transformed India from a milk-deficient country into one of the largest producers of milk globally. Anand became the center of this transformation, with thousands of farmers contributing milk to cooperative societies every day.

Today, Anand houses the headquarters of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which manages Amul. The city also has institutions like the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), further strengthening its importance in the dairy sector.

What makes Anand unique is not just the scale of milk production but the system behind it. Farmers, even in small villages, are directly connected to the supply chain. They receive fair prices, and modern processing ensures quality products reach consumers across India.

Because of its central role in India’s dairy success story, Anand proudly holds the title of the “Milk Capital of India.” It stands as a symbol of how collective effort and smart planning can transform an entire industry and improve millions of lives.
