Traveling to Chandratal Lake is an adventure in and of itself. Chandratal Lake may be reached by road via two different routes from Delhi. The first route passes through Manali, while the second route passes through Shimla before arriving at Spiti Valley.
Route from Shimla: This route leads to Narkanda and starts in Delhi. You can proceed to Kalpa from here and from there to Kaza and Nako. Following a brief rest at Spiti Valley, you can continue from Kaza in the direction of Chandratal Lake. You can go to Kinnaur from Shimla and then go on to Spiti Valley. You can visit Chandratal Lake once you are at Spiti Valley.
Route from Manali: The route to Manali is the best choice if you’re looking for a quicker method to go to Chandratal Lake. You will begin your tour in Delhi and travel a short distance through Mandi, Kullu, Rohtang La, Battal, and Gramphoo before arriving at Chandratal Lake.
1. By public transportation: There are two ways to Chandratal that you can choose from when taking public transportation.
-Shimla to Chandratal: Shimla to Reckong Peo is served by two non-air-conditioned buses. To get to Kaza, take an HRTC bus at 7:00 AM after arriving at Reckong Peo. Take a bus to Manali from Kaza and disembark at the Chandratal Lake detour. From here, hiking is an option for the entire distance.
2. Road conditions: The road conditions deteriorate as you leave the Manali-Leh route. There are multiple river crossings along the unclean, bumpy track that connects Gramphu and Batal. The road conditions will not improve much even if you have chosen the Kaza-Chandratal route. Because of the rocky formations, there are numerous problematic areas along the entire course.
