A man who reportedly claimed to be a policeman and threatened her with an explicit video last week 20-year-old college student raped near her apartment in Delhi.
Ravi Solanki, the man, was taken into custody on Thursday.
On July 7, Solanki allegedly recorded a video using a cell phone of the young woman and her boyfriend in his car. He took his bike after the car and waited as her lover dropped her off outside her Prashant Vihar flat.
He entered the apartment complex and claimed to be a police officer when he saw her on the stairs. He purportedly threatened to upload the footage after showing her. According to the authorities, he immediately attacked her, raped her on the steps, and then ran away.
The woman told her boyfriend what had happened, and the duo called the police together.
According to a person with knowledge of the inquiry, “The alleged offender pretended to be a police officer and assured the victim that he would also alert her parents. Later, he invited her to join him on a building’s terrace where he sexually abused her before leaving. When the woman went to the police, a rape complaint was filed.
Police claimed that it was challenging to identify the suspect because the case was entirely blind. “We looked through the CCTV tape, but it wasn’t very helpful. A team of police officers and sketch artists sat down with the woman the day following the incident and sketched the perpetrator, the official recalled.
Using the sketch, a second team of police officers canvassed the neighbourhood and posted flyers. The Crime Branch ultimately located and captured the suspect, the source continued.
If the accused has ever abused other women, police will look into that. The police added that a charge sheet will be filed as soon as possible.
