Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has expressed disappointment following Virat Kohli’s untimely run-out on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test against New Zealand. Kohli’s dismissal came at a crucial juncture, impacting India’s efforts to establish dominance in the match.
Virat Kohli, who looked confident at the crease, began his innings with a promising start, hitting a boundary off Rachin Ravindra’s full toss. However, the final over of the day turned out to be costly. Attempting a risky single on the third ball, Kohli misjudged a run that ended with a sharp direct hit from Matt Henry at mid-on. The bowler’s quick reflexes produced a precise throw, dislodging the bails before Kohli could complete his dive back to safety. Kohli’s exit for a disappointing score came as India sought stability to close out the day.
Reacting to the incident, Mohammad Kaif shared his thoughts on his official X account: “Virat Kohli in this series has been clean bowled to a full toss and now this error of judgement to be run out. This needs to change if India needs to reach the WTC final.” The former India batter pointed out Kohli’s series-long struggles with lapses in judgement, emphasizing the need for improved decision-making.
India’s position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table remains uncertain following their recent series loss to New Zealand. To maintain a realistic chance of reaching the WTC final, India must secure victories in at least four of their remaining six Test matches, including the ongoing clash in Mumbai.
