From Bollywood to Apple CEO: Iconic eatery Swati Snacks draws celebrity crowd!

This month, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited India to inaugurate Apple Store Saket and Apple Store BKC. Cook was caught enjoying Vada Pav with Madhuri Dixit on the inaugural day (Monday (April 17), before the official inauguration of the BKC shop. The location of this eatery, Swati Snacks, which is a popular vegetarian eating place in South Mumbai’s Tardeo district, was disclosed by the signature black board in the background. Mukesh Ambani, tabla mastereo Ustad Zakir Husain and MF Husain0 are among its sponsors. Swati Snacks’ reputation is such that you seldom obtain a table without waiting at least 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

Meenakshi Jhaveri was a homemaker famed for her chaat among friends and family. Jhaveri consented to create Swati Snacks after years of encouraging her.

Swati Snacks established when?

In a 110 square foot facility, ten products were served to four tables by Swati Snacks, which opened its doors in 1963. In the 1960s, the Jhaveris also assert that they were the first to provide freshly made, hand-churned sitafal ice cream. Meenakshi had assistance from the Jhaveris’ maharaj, a traditional Rajasthani chef. The Jhaveris would prepare all the meals in the morning at home before bringing it to the restaurant around 2:00 p.m. Swati Snacks would start taking orders at 4 o’clock.

After whom is Swati Snacks named?

Swati Snacks is the name of Asha Jhaveri’s mother’s eatery. It has a familiar ring to it and is easy to remember. The restaurant’s popularity increased over the years, and by the 1980s, it had expanded to occupy a considerably bigger space and had its own kitchen. Swati Snacks’ success may be attributed to a number of factors, including name, location, food quality, and an amalgamation of all three. The restaurant’s popularity increased over the years, and by the 1980s, it had expanded to occupy a considerably bigger space and had its own kitchen.

What is Swati Snacks’ most well-known dish?

Swati Snacks’ menu showcases the many culinary traditions of the city with dishes like Gujarati fada ni khichadi, Udipi rava masala dosa, and Maharashtrian missal. Rice and vegetarian Dhansakh are also included as a nod to the Parsi people. Panki, a delicate rice pancake cooked on a banana leaf, was first added to the menu in 2000 and was first served to customers. Panki’s popularity increased over time to the point that Swati Snacks became associated with it. Today, panki is the star item on Swati Snacks’ single-page menu and is offered in a variety of flavours, which include pudina panki, suva (dill), and even a panki uttapam.

Are there any branches of Swati Snacks?

Since taking over management of the company from the first generation Jhaveris, it has grown beyond its original Tardeo site. Currently, Swati Snacks operates a single location in the Nariman Point commercial neighbourhood in South Mumbai and a cloud kitchen in Juhu (western suburb of Mumbai). There were two of these in Ahmedabad as well. Despite serving classic comfort cuisine, Swati Snacks has made it onto a number of award lists, including Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants’ 2021 Essence of Asia collection.

Swati Snacks had received praise from Michelin-starred chefs Prateek Sadhu of Masque and Ravinder Bhogal of Jikoni in London only weeks before Covid-19 brought the world to a standstill. This notoriety placed Swati Snacks on the map, so when Tim Cook needed to be photographed eating some local food in Mumbai, Apple selected vada pav and Swati Snacks.
