The euphoria surrounding Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) inaugural IPL title victory turned to tragedy yesterday, Tuesday, following a devastating incident outside Chinnaswamy Stadium. India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has weighed in on the unfortunate events, emphasizing that “Preparation and precaution should come first while celebration can come later.”

RCB’s triumph over Punjab Kings in a thrilling final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad ignited massive celebrations in Bengaluru. However, what should have been a moment of unbridled joy quickly devolved into chaos when a victory parade outside Chinnaswamy Stadium led to confusion and tragedy among the throngs of fans.

The stadium, designed for a capacity of 35,000, was reportedly swamped by an enormous crowd estimated between 2 to 3 lakh people. It’s believed that free passes, severe overcrowding, and a limited number of seats at the stadium were significant factors contributing to a stampede that tragically claimed at least 11 lives and left over 30 injured.

Speaking at a pre-England series press conference alongside newly-appointed Indian skipper Shubman Gill, Gambhir openly addressed the apparent lack of preparedness and concern from authorities and other involved parties leading up to the parade. This event was meant to celebrate RCB’s long-awaited IPL championship after an 18-year wait.

Gambhir didn’t shy away from his strong convictions, stating, “I am nobody to ascertain responsibilities. When I used to play, I never believed in roadshows. I still don’t and I never will.” He continued, “Winning and celebration are important, but the life of an individual is more important.” He stressed the critical need for adequate preparation, adding, “So if we are not prepared or not able to handle this kind of crowd, then such roadshows shouldn’t happen. We are all responsible citizens of this country, and it should reflect in all our actions.”

In the grim aftermath of the tragedy, RCB released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the loss of life, mourning the tragic incidents, and extending their heartfelt condolences to all the affected families.
