Here’s why Bombay HC ordered Rapido to stop operating in Maharashtra immediately

A court has directed  Rapido to stop operating in Maharashtra, with immediate effect. The bike taxi aggregator was asked to do so due to the fact that it does not have a license

Rapido, a bike taxi aggregator, has been ordered by the Bombay High Court to cease operations in Maharashtra immediately because it lacks a licence to provide bike taxi or rickshaw services.

Following this, Rapido agreed to suspend all of its services in Maharashtra, including bike taxis, rickshaws, and food delivery, until January 20, 2023. Rapido told the court that the app is no longer available in the state.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and S G Dige told the Pune-based cab aggregator to either immediately cease its bike taxi services or the court would have to give directives to the state authorities exempting the firm from obtaining any licence. The bench stated that the corporation cannot operate its services in an uncontrolled way in the absence of a licence.

Roppen Transportation Services Private Limited filed a court petition in response to a letter made by the state government on December 29, 2022, refusing to award it a bike taxi aggregator licence.

In its letter, the state administration stated that there was no state policy on licencing of bike taxis and no pricing structure regulation. The corporation promised to cease its operations until January 20, when the court would hear the case again.

Advocate General Birendra Saraf informed the court that the company’s case should be heard only after they had ceased operations. .

He added, “They can’t appear to this court while operating unlawfully.”

Saraf went on to say that the government has created a committee to investigate the matter and consider developing standards for bike taxis.

Advocate General Saraf stated, “We are also in the process of imposing prohibitions and launching prosecutions against organisations operating unlicensed bike taxis.”
