On Tuesday, May 27, producer Sajid Nadiadwala released the trailer of Housefull 5, the much anticipated fifth instalment of one of the most popular comedy franchises in Indian films. The film, which stars Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Akshay Kumar, will begin showing in theatres on June 6. Notably, the film is scheduled for two different climaxes in other presentations.
The trailer begins with a voiceover by Nana Patekar’s character, who describes how a millionaire, Ranjeet Dobriyal, is hosting a party on a yacht to celebrate his 100th birthday. Dobriyal essentially declares “Jolly” to be the heir to his kingdom during the celebration. The issue? His three sons, Julius (Akshay), Jalbhushan (Abhishek), and Jalabuddin (Riteish), all identify as Jolly.
In a shocking turn of events, Dobriyal is found dead, and the three are accused of killing their father. The investigation takes a humorous turn when they admit they were given a drink the previous evening, which caused them to lose all memory of what had happened. Two knowledgeable police officers (played by Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff) are called to assist with the case. The remainder of the nearly four-minute teaser promises a funny murder mystery comedy reminiscent of The Afterparty, Murder Mystery, and Knives Out.
In a statement to the press, writer-producer Sajid Nadiadwala said he has been thinking about the story of Housefull 5 and the idea of having two different climaxes for the last 30 years. “I’ve always wanted to make a thriller, and the idea finally came to me 3–4 years ago, right after I finished writing Housefull 4. I wrote the story and screenplay myself, and it’s truly a dream come true. What makes this film unique is that different shows will have altogether different killers and climaxes. Imagine a 3 PM show having one ending, and the 6 PM show having another – this is happening across single screens and multiplexes.”
The cast of Housefull 5, which Tarun Mansukhani directed, includes Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Ranjeet, Soundarya Sharma, Nikitin Dheer, Akashdeep Sabir, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangada Singh, Fardeen Khan, Chunky Pandey, and Sonam Bajwa.
The video was shot aboard a luxury cruise from London to France, Spain, then back to the United Kingdom. Through Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Nadiadwala is the producer of Housefull 5.
