Indiaās pace ace Jasprit Bumrah may no longer serve as the teamās vice-captain during the upcoming five-match Test series in England this June. The series marks the beginning of the 2025ā27 World Test Championship cycle and is expected to test both depth and consistency within the Indian squad.
Previously, Bumrah was appointed as Rohit Sharmaās deputy during Indiaās last Test series against Australia. He led the team to their only victory on that tour in the opening match at Perth and captained again in the final Test at Sydney when Rohit opted out of the playing XI.
However, a recent report indicates that Bumrah is unlikely to feature in all five matches of the England tour due to workload management strategies. This has prompted the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to consider an alternative candidate for the vice-captaincyāsomeone expected to be available throughout the series.
āWe want a player who will be available for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captainās role. Jasprit Bumrah wonāt be playing all five matches, so we donāt want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain should be certain and play all five Tests,ā sources in the BCCI told the national daily.
This shift in leadership roles underscores the BCCIās intent to maintain stability in team leadership while also safeguarding Bumrahās fitness for the long term.
