KL Rahul’s Request For Rest Declined, Told To Remain Available For England Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly directed wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul to participate in the upcoming white-ball series against England. This development contradicts earlier reports suggesting that Rahul had requested rest from the series, a request that was allegedly accepted by the board with assurances that his place in the Champions Trophy squad in February was secure.

India is set to face England in a five-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series, commencing on January 22. Rahul recently played all five Tests during the series against Australia and was regarded as part of the same category as captain Rohit Sharma, senior batter Virat Kohli, and vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, who are expected to be rested for the ODIs following a demanding tour in Australia.

According to a source, the selectors initially decided to rest Rahul for the entire white-ball series against England at home. This decision was influenced by his role as a middle-order batter and wicketkeeper in the ODI format. However, the BCCI later reconsidered and has now asked Rahul to play in the ODI series to ensure he gets sufficient match practice ahead of the Champions Trophy in February.

Rahul last played an ODI in August 2024 during a three-match series against Sri Lanka, which was the only ODI series India participated in that year. With the Champions Trophy approaching, Rahul could play a vital role in India’s squad. His versatility to bat across the order, particularly excelling at the number five position, makes him a valuable asset. Despite facing criticism for his performance in the 2023 World Cup final, Rahul had an otherwise impressive tournament, amassing 452 runs at an average of 75.33. His inclusion in the England series will be a crucial step in maintaining form and readiness for the upcoming global event.
