Lovlina Borgohain – India’s New Olympic Medallist
A new star shine in the sky of the Tokyo Olympics 2021. Indian Boxer scripted her name in the book of history when she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Nien Chin Chen in the women’s welterweight. On Friday the 23-year-old Indian boxer became the third Indian boxer to confirm an Olympic medal. Lovlina lost against the leading world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semifinals. Lovlina Borgohain’s Background
Lovlina Borgohain belongs to the Golaghat District of Assam and she was born on 2nd October 1997. Her father Tiken Borgohain is a small-scale businessman. He always supported his children and struggled financially to support his daughter’s goal and dream. Her mother’s name is Mamoni Borgohain. She also has two twin sisters Licha and Lima who competed at the national level of kickboxing. Lovlina also began her career with kickboxing but later she shifted to boxing.
Lovlina Borgohain’s Career
Lovlina participated in trials at her high school Barpathar Girls High School organized by the sports authority of India. Renowned Coach Padum Boro noticed her and selected her and started her training in 2012.
Later she was coached by Sandhya Gurung. Lovlina’s first career break was when she was selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games welterweight boxing category. She was defeated by Sandy Ryan from the UK in the quarterfinals. She had also won the bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam in November 2017 and the bronze medal at the President’s Cup held in Astana in June 2017.
Later she won the gold medal in the welterweight category in an International Boxing Championship held in February 2018. She brought a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia in June 2018 and a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland in September 2018.
Lovlina represented India for the first time at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, held in New Delhi, where she won the bronze medal in the Welterweight(69 kg) category on 23 November 2018.
Lovlina Borgohain won consecutive bronze medals at the World championship in 2018 and 2019. In March 2020, Borgohain secured the Olympic seat in the 69 kg with the win over Maftuna khon Melieva of Uzbekistan in the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. With this, she became the first-ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. Lovlina was Awarded Arjuna Award in 2020.
