Former Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s dominant 180-run victory over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, has made a bold prediction for the upcoming edition of the ICC event. Amir, who announced his retirement from international cricket for the second time last year, believes that Pakistan will have the upper hand when the two teams meet in the Champions Trophy next month.
The much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 23.
While India has a perfect 100% win record over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup, the two teams have faced off five times in the Champions Trophy, with India managing only two victories against Pakistan. The last Champions Trophy encounter between the two sides saw Pakistan thrash India by 180 runs to clinch the 2017 title. Reflecting on that game, Amir, who was instrumental in dismissing top Indian batsmen such as Rohit Sharma (0), Virat Kohli (5), and Shikhar Dhawan (21), expressed confidence in Pakistan’s chances, citing their recent performances.
“The way Pakistan has played recently—defeating Australia in Australia and then beating South Africa—shows their strength, especially in overseas conditions,” Amir told Times of India. “Considering their recent form, I believe Pakistan will have the upper hand against India. However, India has always been my favourite in big tournaments. But right now, the Indian team is under pressure and facing severe criticism due to their recent defeats.”
Amir also pointed out that India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is currently struggling with a back injury and may be a doubtful starter for the Champions Trophy in 2025. He believes that Bumrah’s potential absence would be a significant blow to the Indian side and could place added pressure on the world No. 1 ODI team.
