Pakistan to host Asia Cup 2023; dispute over India touring for tournament

The BCCI had said last year that Team India would not tour Pakistan for this tournament. The hosting of this year’s Asia Cup has been given to Pakistan. Since there is not much time left for the start of the Asia Cup, a solution will be found soon. This year’s Asia Cup will be contested in Pakistan.

Last year, the BCCI stated that Team India will not go Pakistan for this competition. This has recently received a significant upgrade. The Asia Cup 2023 discussion has heated up once more.

The Asia Cup will be held in Pakistan this year, however following last year’s BCCI AGM, ACC president and BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced unequivocally that the Indian squad will not travel Pakistan for the Asia Cup.

Following this, Rameez Raza, previous head of the Pakistan Cricket Board, expressed his disapproval. Because there isn’t much time left till the Asia Cup begins. With this in mind, a solution will be discovered shortly. In the meanwhile, Board of Directors voiced his disapproval with this.

Meanwhile, PCB’s current chairman, Najam Sethi, has made a significant comment. The Asian Cricket Council, according to Najam Sethi, has agreed to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s proposal to host an executive board meeting in Bahrain to discuss this year’s Asia Cup and India’s participation. According to him, the board of directors will meet on February 4.

In an interview with the media, he stated that during his travel to Dubai, he was able to persuade the ACC members to hold a board meeting.

“It is a significant step that the ACC Board will meet in Bahrain on February 4 to address Asia Cup problems,” he added.

“In March, the ICC will also convene. I will not say anything publicly about what I said to the ACC members in Dubai or what I intend to do in the next sessions. Cricket connections between India and Pakistan are crucial,” he went on to say.

Last year, the PCB voiced its discontent with ACC president Jay Shah’s announcement that the Indian squad would not come to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, which would be hosted abroad.

If this happens, Rameez Raja, the PCB’s chairman at the time, has vowed to boycott the ODI World Cup, which will be staged in India this year. But he was fired a few days later, and the case went utterly cold.

Once again, PCB chairman Najam Sethi’s comment has exacerbated the controversy, since neither the BCCI nor the ACC have provided an update.

How much substance Najam Sethi’s statements have will be revealed in the coming months. But the main uncertainty is whether Pakistan will host the Asia Cup this year.

Let us remind you that Jay Shah is the current President of the ACC, and he said unequivocally last year that the Indian team will not travel Pakistan.

If a meeting on this matter is conducted, India will have the upper hand. It is rumoured that the Asia Cup will be staged in the UAE rather than Pakistan.

Despite its location in the UAE, Pakistan will continue to host the Asia Cup. As happened at the World Cup in 2021.

The event was moved to the UAE due to the Corona outbreak in India, however it was hosted by the BCCI.
