Ranbir Kapoor rejected three films, which eventually brought stardom to Ranveer Singh.
Ranbir Kapoor, one of the leading actors working in Hindi cinema today, has starred in several successful films, such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Brahmastra, Animal, and Sanju. The star kid has, however, also turned down a number of lucrative films, three of which were picked up by his arch-rival, Ranveer Singh.
In 2010, Ranveer Singh made his screen debut in Bollywood with the movie Band Baaja Baaraat. Ranbir Kapoor was first approached about the movie, but he turned it down. Over time, the romantic comedy film—which also served as Maneesh Sharma’s directorial debut—has grown to become a beloved classic. When Karan Johar asked Ranbir what role he regretted not taking on for Koffee With Karan 4, in 2013, he replied, “Band Baaja Baaraat.” During the 2018 News18 Rising India Summit, Ranveer recalled telling Rajeev Masand how he got his first movie deal: “Band Baaja Baraat was rejected by Ranbir Kapoor. YRF was seeking a fresh appearance. When I received the call, I knew it was the chance I had been waiting for. I refrained from modeling and doing music videos to protect my face. And after that, I had a huge debut, basically as a “outsider,” against Anushka Sharma, a fairly well-known celebrity.”
The second film that Zoya Akhtar’s dysfunctional family drama Dil Dhadakne Do, which made Rs 151 crore worldwide, was rejected by Ranbir and ended up in Ranveer’s lap. Originally, Zoya had planned for Kareena Kapoor Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, who are siblings in real life, to portray Kabir Mehra and Ayesha Mehra. However, scheduling issues forced Ranbir to withdraw from the movie, and Kareena followed suit, saying that her primary reason for participating was to play her cousin’s true sister. Anil verified this information by saying to Ranbir in a promotional video for Animal’s Netflix OTT release earlier this year, “When I said yes to Dil Dhadakne Do, you were doing it.”
Zoya Akhtar apparently approached Ranbir again for Gully Boy after the actor turned down Dil Dhadakne Do. She offered Kapoor the role of MC Sher even though Ranveer was already committed to play the lead character of Murad; however, Kapoor once again turned down the filmmaker since he didn’t want to play a supporting role alongside Ranveer. Even though Ranveer received a lot of praise for his portrayal, Ranbir, who played MC Sher, had a slight chance to overshadow him. In the 2019 film that made Rs 235 crore worldwide, rookie Siddhant Chaturvedi finally played MC Sher.
Despite the fact that Ranveer has starred in other successful films, like Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, and Simmba. The above three films rejected by Ranbir undoubtedly helped advance Ranveer’s career and brought stardom to him.
