Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have been a consistent presence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inaugural season in 2008. Despite boasting a passionate fanbase and numerous star players over the years, the elusive IPL title has remained just out of their grasp. However, as the 18th edition of the tournament unfolds in 2025, a renewed sense of hope is palpable among RCB supporters, who believe this could finally be their year.

Historically, the IPL’s playoff format has seen some evolution. Prior to 2011, the top four teams engaged in traditional semi-finals. Subsequently, the format shifted, granting the top two teams an extra opportunity to reach the final through the Qualifier system.

Interestingly, since this format change, teams finishing second in the league standings have demonstrated a strong track record, having clinched the IPL title on eight occasions. In comparison, teams finishing first have won five times, while teams finishing third have only managed to lift the trophy once.

Having concluded the league phase of the 2025 season in the coveted second position, the devoted fans of Royal Challengers Bengaluru are understandably filled with optimism, clinging to the historical precedent that favors teams in their current standing. The long wait for the IPL trophy might finally be nearing its end for the loyal RCB faithful.
