Every year on June 3rd, World Bicycle Day is celebrated. The United Nations General Assembly created it in 2018 to acknowledge bicycles as a basic, economical, dependable, clean, and environmentally friendly sustainable mode of transportation. The choice of this day is noteworthy since it marks the anniversary of Karl von Drais’ creation of the bicycle in 1817. Given that the bicycle has been used as a useful method of transportation for more than 200 years, the United Nations General Assembly formally established this day in April 2018 to celebrate its outstanding attributes, toughness, and adaptability. History of World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day was first observed on June 3, 2018, following the adoption of a resolution by the UN General Assembly at its 72nd regular session in New York City in April. More than 193 member nations endorsed the statement, which urged countries to integrate bicycles into regional, global, and sub-national development programs and policies.

The General Assembly decided to declare June 3rd as World Bicycle Day in recognition of the bicycle’s distinctiveness, durability, and adaptability. The bicycle has been around for more than 200 years and is a simple, affordable, dependable, clean, and environmentally friendly sustainable mode of transportation that promotes environmental stewardship and health.

The following are some of the main significance of World Bicycle Day:

1) To increase understanding of the advantages of riding. Cycling is a sustainable, cost-effective, and healthful mode of transportation. It can support social involvement, increase physical fitness, and lessen air pollution and transportation congestion.
2) To promote improved cycling infrastructure. Bicyclists are often not considered in the planning of many cities and towns. It may become risky and challenging to ride a bike as a result. World Bicycle Day is an opportunity to advocate for improved bike lanes, trails, and other infrastructure that would make cycling safer and simpler.
 3) To advocate for the use of cycling as a means of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
