Adani shown business skills as a kid. He left college after his second year to pursue a profession. He was one of his parents’ seven children, all of whom were poor. His father was a textile trader.

Adani relocated to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter. His first position lasted around 2-3 years, but he had understood the intricacies of the company and how it evolves with the market by then.

His experience of the industry aided him in establishing a diamond brokerage. It was his first attempt at entrepreneurship. His life took another turn when his brother, Mahasukh Adani, summoned him back to Ahmedabad to work at the plastic business he had founded. Gautam joined the company and was soon importing polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, into India The occasion marked his entrée into the global commerce arena.

Adani studied at Gujarat University but dropped out in the second year of his commerce studies. After dropping out of college and refusing to continue in his father’s textile company, Gautam Adani worked as a diamond sorter in Mumbai in the 1980s.

Adani began a diamond dealing business and became a billionaire at the age of 20. In 1988, he established a commodities import and export enterprise. Adani was apparently abducted at gunpoint in 1998 for ransom after leaving a bar in Ahmedabad with another man, and was eventually freed.

Adani was also involved in the 26/11 terror attacks; hotel workers assisted him in hiding in a cellar from the terrorists who stormed the Taj where he was dining. He was cited as stating that he observed militants enter the premises from the table where he was sitting.

A successful individual is distinguished from the crowd by his or her foresight and ability to grab opportunities. Adani is a living example of this. He saw chances as the Indian economy opened the door to globalization. It turned out to be a godsend for him. Taking advantage of the circumstances, he quickly diversified to seize the new market.

Adani established the Adani Group in 1988, although his company’s first focus was on agricultural products and power. But that changed in 1991, when the Indian economy entered a new era. Given the shift in market demand, Adani seized the chance to diversify.

Adani Group gradually evolved into a conglomerate, diversifying into electricity generating and transmission, coal trading and mining, gas distribution, oil and gas exploration, ports, and special economic zones (SEZ).

According to Forbes, Gautam Adani’s net worth was little more than $80 billion as of January 4, 2022. Adani was the richest person in Asia for a short time on November 24, 2021, with a net worth of $89.1 billion, replacing RIL’s Mukesh Ambani.

He is ranked #24 on Forbes’ Billionaires List 2021 and #14 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. But, Adani is a firm believer in giving back to society.

Despite his meteoric rise, Gautam has always remained true to his roots.
