Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has urged the Indian cricket team to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of keeping politics separate from sports. His remarks come amid uncertainty over India’s involvement in the tournament, scheduled for February 2025.
Speaking to reporters, Tejashwi Yadav highlighted the inconsistency in opposing India’s travel to Pakistan for cricket matches. Drawing a comparison with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2015 visit to Pakistan, he stated, “Involving politics in sports is not a good thing. Doesn’t everyone participate in the Olympics? Why shouldn’t India go to Pakistan? If the PM can go there to have biryani, why can’t the Indian cricket team travel for a tournament?”
India last toured Pakistan in 2008 during the Asia Cup, with bilateral cricketing ties remaining frozen since the 2012-13 series in India. Recent clashes between the two teams have been limited to ICC tournaments and Asia Cup matches.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has consistently stated that any decision about playing in Pakistan depends on directives from the Indian government. India’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy is likely to be a topic of discussion during an ICC Board meeting on Friday, where hosting arrangements will also be reviewed.
