This Country Just Banned Pouring Used Cooking Oil Down the Sink

Cooking at home just got a little more responsible in Turkey and a lot more regulated. The country has rolled out strict new rules about how people dispose of used cooking oil. From now on, pouring leftover vegetable oil down the sink or drain is completely banned. This move is part of a larger effort to cut down on environmental pollution and protect water systems.

Instead of dumping oil, households will now need to store it properly and hand it over for safe disposal. Local municipalities will play a key role by collecting waste oils directly from homes or through designated collection systems.

This change is tied to Turkey’s broader Zero Waste Movement, an initiative led by Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The program focuses on reducing waste and encouraging more sustainable habits across the country.

Under the updated system, responsibility doesn’t just fall on households. Retailers are now also required to help manage the process. People are expected to bring their used cooking oil in sealed containers back to stores. These stores will then send the collected oil to licensed biorefineries or official disposal centers.

The new rules come under a revised draft of the “Regulation on the Management of Vegetable Waste Oils” by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. The guidelines clearly state that used oils must not be dumped into sinks, sewers, soil, seas, or any natural environment.

Instead, households must dispose of frying oil, cooking oil, and other vegetable oil waste through proper channels—such as municipal collection centers, drop-off points, mobile collection units, or participating retail locations.

In short, what used to be a simple kitchen habit is now a regulated process—with the goal of keeping the environment cleaner and safer for everyone.
