The Kargil War marked a significant chapter in modern Indian history, being the last major armed conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999. As soldiers fought bravely on the frontlines, citizens across the country contributed through fundraising and morale-boosting efforts. Amid this national movement, a notable figure who went beyond the usual support was three-time National Award-winning Bollywood star Nana Patekar.
Nana Patekar paused his acting career to actively assist the Indian Army during the Kargil War. In a recent appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, he shared with Amitabh Bachchan how he served at the front during the conflict. Having lived and trained with the Maratha Light Infantry for three years in the early 90s while working on his film Prahaar, Nana felt a deep connection with the Army. When the war began, he approached senior officers from the division to join the soldiers at the front, only to be denied. Only the defence minister could authorize such a request.
Determined, Nana reached out to Defence Minister George Fernandes directly. Initially skeptical, Fernandes was surprised to learn about Nana’s extensive training. Upon verifying his background with the Maratha Light Infantry, he granted permission for Nana Patekar to join the soldiers.
In August 1999, Nana spent over two weeks near the Line of Control (LoC), assisting soldiers and even working in the base hospital for a few days. He described his role in the Quick Response Team (QRT) and the extreme conditions he faced, sharing that he lost 20 kg during his stay, returning from Srinagar at just 56 kg.
Upon returning, Nana resumed his acting career and continued to be part of some of India’s most successful and critically acclaimed films. His latest appearance was in Anil Sharma’s Vanvaas, released in December 2024.
