Two-Day State Mourning Declared as Oommen Chandy Passes Away, Tributes Pour In for Congress Stalwart

Following the death of former state chief minister Oommen Chandy, who passed away this morning in Bengaluru after a protracted illness, the Kerala government has declared a two-day period of national mourning. His son Chandy Oommen announced the news of his passing on Facebook by writing, “Appa has passed away.”

The 79-year-old leader was admitted to a Thiruvananthapuram private hospital early this year after developing pneumonia. He was then transported to Bengaluru for more medical care. Leaders from all political parties paid respect to the veteran Congressman and recalled his efforts as the state’s chief executive.

Two different times, Oommen Chandy presided as Kerala’s chief minister. The record for the longest-serving MLA in Kerala was held by Chandy.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, said: “We won seats in the Legislative Assembly in the same year. We first became politically prominent through student life at the same time. It is quite difficult to say goodbye to him because we both lived public lives at the same time. Oommen Chandy was an effective manager and a person who took an active interest in other people’s lives.

‘Visionary Leader’ is remembered by Congress

“My humble tribute to the stalwart Oommen Chandy, former Kerala Chief Minister and a steadfast Congress man who stood tall as a leader of the masses,” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote in a tweet. The advancement of Kerala and the political climate of the country were forever changed by his steadfast dedication and innovative leadership. He will be cherished for his commitment to and assistance to the populace. Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.

“Extremely sad to bid farewell to our most beloved leader and former CM Shri. Oommen Chandy,” the Kerala Congress tweeted. Chandy sir, one of Kerala’s most well-liked and charismatic leaders, was adored by people of all ages and socioeconomic classes. His leadership and vigor will be missed by the Congress family.
