Luxfer Gas Cylinders has developed the UK’s first mass-produced hydrogen-electric truck. Tevva, a maker of electric trucks, modified its battery-electric heavy-duty vehicle to incorporate a hydrogen fuel cell system that recharges the battery and increases its range by 310 miles.
Following the introduction of the nation’s first mass-produced hydrogen-electric truck, which represents the next phase of the transition from fossil-based fuels to low carbon energy, the UK has hit a “historic milestone” in its march toward net zero.
Together with Tevva engineers and experts in alternative fuels, Luxfer Gas Cylinders (Luxfer) developed the truck’s “plug and play” hydrogen storage system.
The engineers of the UK-based gas equipment specialist assisted Tevva, a maker of electric trucks, in modifying the design of its battery-electric heavy-duty vehicle to incorporate a hydrogen fuel cell system that recharges the truck’s battery and increases its range by 310 miles (500km). Jimmy Gregory, European Business Development Manager, Luxfer, stated that Tevva contacted the firm back in October 2020 and explained that Tevva was looking for a partner who prioritised safety and innovation and shared their goal of easily available hydrogen.
The solution, which was created utilising three of our G-Stor H2 cylinders, was appropriate and easily incorporated into their current framework.
Gregory continued by saying that the initiative shows how the UK is setting the standard for hydrogen technology by providing “the best of both worlds” with its proposed solution.
The UK’s first hydrogen train, HydroFLEX, which was displayed during the COP26 meeting in June 2021, was also powered by the storage system provided by Luxfer. Luxfer’s technology has proven to be widely sought after for heavy-duty trucks, garbage vehicles, buses, trains, and bulk gas transportation modules. It is regarded as some of the most effective and highest capacity Type 3 alternative fuel cylinders in the world.
A representative for Tevva REX Team said, “The team at Luxfer Gas Cylinders has been a fantastic assistance to us from our early prototype development to this milestone of launching our first hydrogen electric truck.
