Suresh Raina has sparked fresh speculations about the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s new captain ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League season. While on Hindi commentary duty during India’s second ODI against England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Raina made a remark that has fueled discussions about the franchise’s leadership.
During the match, just before Virat Kohli was dismissed, he was struck on the arm by a throw from Jos Buttler, who quickly apologized. Kohli and Phil Salt exchanged smiles and continued the game. Amidst this, Raina, speaking on air, casually mentioned, “He’s captain too this time.” The remark caught the attention of fellow commentators Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar, who turned to each other for confirmation. However, Bangar stated that he had no knowledge of any such decision.
RCB is currently in search of a new leader following Faf du Plessis’ departure. Head Coach Andy Flower had previously stated that no official discussions had taken place regarding the captaincy for the upcoming season. Addressing the matter, Flower remarked, “You’re going to have to wait for the outcome. It’s a new era we are entering, the start of a three-year cycle, and I’m sure the anticipation will be good for you.”
Despite persistent questions about the captaincy, Flower reiterated that no formal communication had been made on the issue. RCB has secured several high-profile domestic and international players for the upcoming cycle, yet no clear candidate has emerged to take over the captain’s role. Speculation about Virat Kohli’s return as skipper has intensified, especially after a report by the Times of India suggested that he might reassume the leadership duties before the auction.
With no official announcement from the franchise, RCB fans continue to wait in anticipation, eager to see who will take charge of the team for the new season.
