Applause: A song set in Mumbai competes with Naatu Naatu for Oscars 2023

0

With Applause, Diane Warren has been nominated for the Oscar for the 14th time and this is her sixth nomination in a row. The song was written by legendary Diane Warren and sung by Sofia Carson, in the rain. On the streets of Mumbai, actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Anjali Lama dance to the song Applause.

Warren has been successfully nominated for an Oscar Award for its fourteenth time, and in fact, this is her 6th nomination back-to-back. In actuality, the 66-year-old American songwriter got an honorary Oscar in November 2022 for her contribution. Warren lauds AR Rahman, who composed the soundtrack for Sharing A Ride. She acknowledges female composers Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum and Elena Maro, who worked on the film’s other components.

Yadav was asked in 2020 by We Do It Together, a non-profit film production group, to be a part of an anthology focusing on women’s tales in order to spark a bigger debate. Krupa Ge, her co-writer for Sharing A Ride, had a real-life incident that she chose to adapt for the film. This 18-minute video depicts the turmoil and realisation of a rich woman professional’s prejudice after she is forced to take a car ride with a transgender person one night.

While the anthology’s other films deal with domestic abuse, being a single parent, choosing childlessness, and other gender-related issues, Yadav’s short is about empathy and forgiveness.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has bought the film, which premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in 2022 and earned the TFF Excellence Award there. Taraji P. Henson, Jennifer Hudson, Pauletta Washington, Cara Delevingne, Catherine Hardwicke, Margherita Buy, Marcia Gay Harden, Eva Longoria, Leonor Varela, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anne Watanabe, and Mipo O have all collaborated on the movies, both behind and facing the camera.

The path of the film, Tell it like a Woman’, started about six years ago when Tilesi conceived of developing a movie “made by some of the finest female filmmakers with top actors delivering tales to encourage women”.

Journey of Dr YN Mahalakshmi from acid attack survivor to Doctor & COVID warrior

Dr Mahalakshmi YN from Mysuru is the epitome of strong willpower and perseverance. She speaks about surviving abuse and how she now focuses on the mental and physical health of her patients.

The concept of ‘survival of the fittest’ was mentioned by Charles Darwin in his theory of evolution. Only the strongest will survive, he hinted. Dr Mahalakshmi YN from Mysuru is one individual who epitomises this notion. She is an acid attack victim who wants to give back to society as a doctor.

What makes this doctor’s life unique is that she is assisting the same society that failed to assist her when she needed it the most.

On January 11, 2001, Dr. Mahalakshmi, 26, was walking home from her clinic when a guy whose approaches she had turned down poured acid on her.

The attacker was the landlord from whom she had rented the clinic. He’d follow her around and misbehave. The doctor then filed a police report against him, and when she refused to remove the report, he assaulted her.

She claims she was able to rehabilitate with the aid and support of her parents and two sisters. She fought a protracted legal struggle against her harasser, who was convicted and sentenced to three years in jail by the Karnataka High Court in 2012.

The doctor has been working as a medical officer with the Karnataka Government Health and Family Services at the Agrahara Old Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Mysuru for over two decades after spending a year in rehabilitation and undergoing over 25 reconstructive operations.

She claims that in order for a woman to recover, she must have knowledge, patience, a strong support system, continuous therapy, and willpower. She also adds that in order to get out of it, one must be busy, and the best way to do it, in her opinion, is to get an education. Her MBBS from Mysore Medical College was beneficial to her.

Today, this doctor sees at least 60-80 individuals every day and gives counselling in addition to physical exams. She also leads the ‘Women Empowerment’ Telegram group.

Here’s how Dawaa Dost is making medicines more affordable for the common man

0

In the next year, it aims to reach over Rs 200 crore GMV, serve over 400 million Indians, and achieve a base of 4 million active transacting users.

Purchasing the medications she needed was routine for Leela Diwakar, 42. Seeing this, a friend suggested she try Dawaa Dost over a year ago, and she has been a frequent client ever since.

Leela isn’t alone in this. According to Amit Choudhary, CEO of Dawaa Dost—a platform trying to bring medications to customers and minimise the expense burden of prescriptions—at the moment, around 500,000 Indians receive their drugs delivered using the app.

Amit has been running Dawaa Dost alongside his colleagues Yash Harlalka (COO) and Anirudh Batwara (CTO) since 2018. After nearly five years, it has touched around 19,000 pin codes and established 70 outlets in nine cities throughout Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telengana, Maharashtra, and Delhi.

It presently operates on an omnichannel approach, with clients able to access services both online and offline.

It has also received less than $4 million in investment from a number of prominent angel investors. Costs can become a hardship for those like Leela who have frequent medicines. One of Dawaa Dost’s promises is that it will reduce the cost of prescriptions by at least half. It is able to do so by purchasing drugs directly from reputable pharmaceutical firms such as Cipla, Zydus, Abbott, and Sun, resulting in up to 80% savings on each prescription.

Dawaa Dost also uses trade generics, which are variations of pharmaceuticals supplied by parent firms of a prescription drug that are not pushed by sales people.

Through a 4-tick procedure, Dawaa Dost advises the same medicine with a different brand to the prescription drug, as well as specifics about the alternatives accessible to its users. It is not uncommon for pharmacists to recommend alternatives to prescription medications. According to BRIEF India (Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals), 67% of individuals visiting pharmacies are provided an alternative brand.

The firm claims to have saved over 3.2 million customers Rs 400 million through its shops, kirana-tech model (association with over 2,500 kirana retailers throughout Rajasthan), and website.

Amit saw early on that Dawaa Dost’s competitive edge would come from establishing a balance between the benefits of the physical world and the suppleness of the digital world. Dawaa Dost has 1.5 million consumers compared to Pharmeasy’s 2.4 million yearly transactional users. Dawaa Dost may also personalise service and develop strong ties with consumers through its physical pharmacies, which can lead to customer loyalty and repeat business.

The company promises to achieve Rs 90 crore GMV in FY23, up 342% from FY22, with net sales of Rs 50 crore in FY23. It had a GMV of Rs 20 crore last year, with a net sale of Rs 12.2 crore.

In 2021, the firm released Medwiki, a video library managed by a team of pharmacists that intends to assist people better understand their medications. The site currently includes over 3.5 million videos in six languages and has been seen by 50 million Indians.

Its Karma Dost web programme reminds users when to take their medications. Karma Dost, which is available on Android and has 59,000 downloads, is used by 100,000 individuals across India and has been shown to enhance medication adherence by more than 60%, according to Amit. According to Leela, the app has been quite helpful in ensuring that her parents take their medications on time.

It has collaborated with 2,500 kirana stores throughout Rajasthan to sell pharmaceuticals through them and has built an aided selling platform to utilise its kirana connections and extend its last-mile deliveries.

Consumers can scan the QR code available at Dawaa Dost’s partner kirana stores, go to the Dawaa Dost website, and register, after which they can either upload the prescription on the website, order medicines and have them delivered to their doorstep, or get help from the command centre if they don’t have a prescription or even a photograph of the medicine.

If customers do not have a smartphone, the kirana store owner can assist them in placing an order using the Dawaa Dost business-to-business (B2B) app. Kirana stores are paid a fee for originating orders, whereas Dawaa Dost retailers fulfil them.

Dawaa Dost aspires to attain over Rs 200 crore GMV in the following year, serve over 400 million Indians, and have four million active transacting consumers. It is also testing a last-mile delivery service called Dawaa Dost Express (DD Express), which would assist direct-to-consumer (D2C) healthcare businesses in providing clients with speedy commerce deliveries. Next year, it intends to expand DD Express to include more than 50 collaborations.

Here’s why Nirmala Sitharaman called millets Shree Anna in Budget 2023

0

India’s finance minister has said that the government will promote its production and make India a global hub of millets. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her budget speech has addressed coarse grains as Srianna.

In her budget statement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the government is trying to make India a worldwide centre of Srianna. India is leading the way in popularising it. He stated that the government will cooperate with local farmers to encourage the production of Sri Anna, which has been eaten in India for generations.

‘Consumption of Shri Anna supports nutrition, food security, and farmer work,’ he remarked, quoting the honourable Prime Minister. We are the world’s top producer and second largest exporter of Sree grain. We cultivate a variety of Srianna varieties, including Jowar, Sri Ragi, Sri Bajra, Srikut, Srianna Ramdana, Kangni, Kutki, Kodo, Cheena, and Sama.’

‘They offer many health advantages and have been a mainstay of our diet for decades,’ he added. I’d want to thank the small farmers for helping to improve the health of my people by farming these grains. The Indian Market Research Institute Hyderabad will now be marketed as a centre of expertise in order to make India a worldwide Srianna powerhouse.

What exactly is Shree Anna? The Finance Minister has referred to millets, or coarse grains, as Shree Anna, which has several advantages. Coarse grains include Jowar, Ragi, Bajra, Kut, Ramdana, Kangni, Kutki, Kodo, China, and Sama. Because they are gluten free, coarse grains, which have been popular in India for millennia, are now gaining popular in western nations as well.

They include a lot of protein, fibre, and antioxidants. Aside from that, coarse grains provide a significant quantity of phosphorus, folate, magnesium, and iron. Millets have more amino acids than other grains, which aid in the formation of proteins in the body. According to a survey published on the top health website Healthline, their ingestion lowers the risk of metal toxicity in the body.

ShriAnn has the following advantages: Millets contain a lot of fibre and non-starchy carbohydrates. These are carbohydrates that do not breakdown and assist to regulate blood sugar levels. They also have a low glycemic index, which keeps blood sugar levels stable. As a result, the usage of coarse grains is recommended for patients with diabetes.

Whole grains lower cholesterol because they include soluble fibre, which causes a sticky material to form in the colon. This sticky material binds fat inside itself, lowering cholesterol levels in the body. According to one study, those with high cholesterol who ate coarse grains had lower levels of bad cholesterol and higher levels of good cholesterol in their bodies.

Many people are intolerant to gluten, thus they avoid eating wheat. Coarse grains are gluten-free, and this is a growing trend. People are opting for gluten-free diets, and coarse grains are the greatest alternative.

Budget 2023: People have different views while #Middleclass trends on Twitter

0

The reactions, like the feelings, were divided, ranging from excitement to scepticism regarding the new concept. While the hashtag #middleclass trended on Twitter, it was clear that many people were perplexed about what the slab structure implied.

After Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered the Union Budget for fiscal year 2023-24, social media channels were swamped with opinions. Following the unveiling of the amended tax policy, there were conflicting reactions. The Union Budget was presented with a number of global issues in mind, such as a sharp rise in inflation and a projected slowdown in GDP growth in fiscal year 2024.

Middle-class taxpayers awaited the budget parameters with bated breath, as they had in previous years. While certain things became less expensive, many others were pushed into the more expensive category. But it was the new and updated tax structure that made some people happy.

Sitharaman suggested a new tax system that boosted the income tax refund maximum from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh. “In 2020, I launched a new personal income tax structure with six earning brackets beginning at Rs 2.5 lakh. I recommend that the tax structure in this regime be changed by lowering the number of slabs to five and raising the tax exemption ceiling to Rs 3 lakh,” she added.

While the hashtag #middleclass trended on Twitter, it was clear that many people were perplexed about what the slab structure implied. The reactions, like the feelings, were divided, ranging from excitement over the new model to scepticism about the news.

According to the Finance Minister, this Budget will prioritise inclusive development, infrastructure and investment, green growth, young power, and the financial industry.

The Sensex was up 1076.55 points at 60,626.45 points. Following the release of the Union Budget 2023-24, the Nifty gained 264.25 points and was trading at 17,926.40.

Film on Subaida a Muslim mother who raised 3 Hindu kids as her own released

0

A film has been made about the story of a Kerala Muslim mother, Subaida, who raised three Hindu children as her own. ‘Ennu Swantham Sreedharan’, directed by Siddik Paravoor, premiered at the Vanitha Theatre in Edappally on January 9.

Chakki died about 50 years ago, but Shanavas recalls that day like it was yesterday. His mother Subaida handed baby Jafer over to his grandmother and hurriedly left the house, tears in her eyes, hoping for one more glimpse of Chakki, who was more of a friend to her than a house help. Subaida went home with three additional children in her arms: Chakki’s youngest, baby Sreedharan, and two other girls, Ramani and Leela. Shanavas received three new siblings into his life on that day, when he was seven years old.

Thennadan Subaida and Abdul Aziz Haji, a devout Muslim couple from Nilambur’s Kalikavu village in Kerala’s Malappuram district, raised the three children of their former domestic helper as their own for the rest of their lives, refusing to convert them to Islam. Subaida died in July 2019 of a renal disease, and her spouse Aziz Haji died two years later. Siddik Paravoor, an acclaimed director, has now adapted the family’s touching story for the big screen. The film, Ennu Swantham Sreedharan (‘With Love, Sreedharan,’ was named after Chakki’s youngest kid and debuted on January 9 at the Vanitha Theatre in Edappally.

The world outside Kalikavu first learned of Subaida through a Facebook post by Sreedharan, who shared the heartbreaking news of his umma’s (Islamic name for mother in Malayalam) death in July 2019. “How does ‘Sreedharan’ get a ‘umma’? Who are you deceiving? “Is this a forgery?” his Facebook pals had inquired. Sreedharan’s sadness had been exacerbated by his inability to travel home from Oman to visit his mother, and the doubts and aspersions put on his life’s events had bordered on harassment.

A day later, he resolved that he would not be defined by society’s dogmas as anything less than Subaida’s son – a Hindu kid of a Muslim mother. As a result, he took to Facebook to tell his life story, allowing the world in on a heartwarming lesson in love and peace.

Sreedharan is aware that his life might have turned out quite differently if he and his sisters had not been adopted by Subaida, especially given his birth family’s caste status. It wasn’t until he had his own son that he realised how much his parents loved him.

Siddik Paravoor, whose last film Thahira was selected for the Indian Panorama Feature Film section of the 51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, first learned about Subaida via Kondotty-based social worker and orator AP Ahamed.

It didn’t take long after Ahamed got Siddik in touch with the family for the initiative to get underway. While dancer Nirmala Kannan played Subaida, journalist and writer Suresh Nellikode, who also produced the film, played Aziz Haji. Nilambur Ayisha and Shihabuddin Poythumkadavu, as well as Sachin Roy, Vaibhav Amarnath, Harsha Arun, and Rajitha Santhosh, played major parts.
