England men’s cricket team captain Ben Stokes ultimately had the final say, triumphing over the significant criticism he received from Michael Vaughan regarding his choice to bowl first in the opening Test against India. Despite many experts predicting a favorable batting surface, Stokes, after winning the toss, opted to field. Vaughan, in particular, was vocal in his disapproval following India’s strong start.

I thought it was a great chance to potentially nick three or four in the first hour. The opposition are allowed to play well.”

Earlier, Vaughan had expressed his displeasure with England’s decision, admitting he was “staggered” by the tactic against India. “I’m a bit of an old-school traditionalist here at Leeds that, when the sun shines, it’s quite an easy decision, particularly with the build-up to the Test match and it being so dry and so nice,” Michael Vaughan had said on the BBC’s Test Match Special. I respect people’s sentiments that we should love our country and that we should stand by our country. But, why these double standards? If you don’t want any Pakistani artists singing, acting or working in any Indian film, you want to ban them. But 80% of the songs of our industry have been stolen, be it their tunes or words or the entire songs. There are so many songs in our films that have been sung by the artists of that country. I don’t want to take names because the list is too long. So, why these double standards?”

The singer went on to elaborate on his point, arguing, “Either get rid of all those songs from YouTube, Spotify and other digital platforms. But not like this, you take just one artist and start protesting against them. It’s like someone came to your house with something to eat and then you start calling them the enemy but you keep eating the things or sweets they brought along with them. If you want to ban (Pakistani artists), ban them completely. Get all that content available in the world lifted… why are you banning films of one artist at a time?”

In stark contrast, Jasprit Bumrah delivered 43.4 overs, secured five wickets, and maintained an impressive economy rate of just 3.2. Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the lack of support from his fellow pacers is unduly increasing Bumrah’s workload. Ashwin specifically suggested that Siraj needs to step up and control the run rate from his end, even if it means not taking a flurry of wickets.

Ashwin elaborated on his YouTube channel, saying, “Bumrah is bowling extraordinarily. Prasidh, when he gets it right, bowls unbelievably well. Jadeja will perform his role. My only question is to Siraj: ‘Can you just dry up the runs? You don’t have to pick wickets, but can you not give away 4-5 runs in every over?’” He further explained the implications of leaking runs, adding, “If runs are being leaked, then you have to bring Bumrah back into the attack. How many dams will Bumrah be able to construct? Also, he gets tired, and his spells are pushed and by then, partnerships are forged. Or you’d have to go with Jadeja, who has to step in to stem the flow of runs.”

Ashwin drew a parallel to the role played by current India bowling coach Morne Morkel during his playing days for South Africa. Morkel’s disciplined bowling helped maintain pressure and allowed strike bowlers like Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander to thrive.

Emphasizing Siraj’s crucial role, Ashwin stated, “Prasidh is playing for the first time (in England) and is inexperienced. Siraj has to play the bankable role. Remember how Morne Morkel used to bowl?
