Celebrate Bakrid with these delightful traditional dishes! Explore flavors, recipes & cultural significance of Biryani, Kebabs & more!

Bakriid, also known as Eid al-Adha, is a revered festival for Muslims worldwide. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion to the One Almighty God, who has created us all. The festival also signifies the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Celebrated on June 17th, 2024 this year, Bakrid is a joyous occasion marked by feasting, prayer, and sharing blessings with loved ones. Food plays a central role in these festivities, bringing families and communities together over traditional culinary delights.

Let’s embark on a delectable adventure as we explore 5 must-have Bakrid dishes to tantalize your taste buds, enjoy the Eid festival, and thank the Creator, whom the Muslims call Allah, Hindus know as Eishwar and the Christians call God.

1. Biryani: The Fragrant King of Bakrid Feasts

Biryani reigns supreme on the Bakrid table, a majestic one-pot meal bursting with flavor and aroma. Fragrant basmati rice forms the base, intricately layered with succulent pieces of meat, typically lamb or goat. A symphony of spices like cumin, coriander, cardamom, and the precious saffron weave their magic, infusing the dish with an unforgettable depth of flavor. The meat is marinated for hours in a luxurious yogurt and spice blend, ensuring melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Biryani is often presented alongside raita, a refreshing yogurt-based side dish, and salan, a vibrant gravy bursting with the tang of tomatoes and onions. This culinary masterpiece is a labor of love, traditionally prepared in abundance to be shared with family, friends, and neighbors, fostering a spirit of togetherness during Bakrid.

2. Kebabs: Skewered Delights for Every Palate

Bakrid celebrations are incomplete without the sizzling allure of kebabs. These succulent morsels of marinated meat, cooked to perfection on skewers over a bed of glowing charcoal, are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Seekh kebabs, crafted with delicately minced meat seasoned with ginger, garlic, and a touch of chili powder, are a popular choice. For those seeking a textural variation, shami kebabs offer a delightful combination of minced meat and lentils. Boti kebabs, featuring chunks of marinated meat, cater to those who enjoy a heartier bite. Chicken tikka, prepared with boneless chicken marinated and cooked in a tandoor oven, offers a delightful poultry alternative. Typically served alongside fluffy naan or parathas, kebabs can be enjoyed as a delightful appetizer or a satisfying main course, adding a touch of fiery charm to your Bakrid feast.

3. Haleem: A Slow-Cooked Symphony of Flavors

Haleem, a slow-cooked wonder, is a must-have for Bakrid celebrations. This hearty dish features a symphony of lentils and meat simmered for hours with a diverse array of spices, resulting in a thick and flavorful stew. The creamy texture of haleem is a delightful contrast to the burst of savory richness from the meat. It’s often adorned with a crown of fried onions, fragrant coriander leaves, and a refreshing squeeze of lime juice, adding vibrant layers of taste and aroma. Haleem is not only a culinary delight but also a powerhouse of nutrition, making it a perfect choice for Eid festivities.

4. Sheer Khurma: A Sweet Ending to a Festive Feast

No Bakrid celebration is complete without a sweet note, and sheer khurma is the undisputed champion of Eid desserts. This traditional sweet dish is a delightful symphony of textures and flavors. Vermicelli noodles, delicately cooked in creamy milk and sugar, are infused with the warmth of cardamom and saffron. The rich dessert is then adorned with a treasure trove of toppings, including an assortment of nuts like almonds, pistachios, and cashews, along with a medley of dried fruits like dates and raisins. Sheer khurma is a decadent and indulgent treat, often enjoyed as a celebratory breakfast on Eid morning or as a sweet conclusion to the festive meal.

5. Nihari: A Rich and Aromatic Stew Steeped in History

Nihari, a slow-cooked masterpiece from North Indian and Pakistani cuisine, adds a touch of historical grandeur to your Bakrid table. This flavorful stew features tender pieces of meat, usually beef or lamb, simmered for hours in a rich and aromatic gravy. The base of the gravy is meticulously crafted with onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and a secret blend of spices, creating a symphony of savory notes. The name “nihari” itself originates from the Urdu word for “morning,” reflecting its traditional role as a breakfast dish for Mughal rulers. Nihari is typically served with naan or roti, offering a comforting and flavorful experience that perfectly complements the celebratory spirit of Bakrid.

Beyond the Recipes: Embracing the Spirit of Bakrid

While the dishes discussed above are central to Bakrid celebrations, the true essence of the festival lies in its spiritual core. It’s a time for المسلمين (Muslims) to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and devotion to Allah (God). It’s also an occasion to practice charity, share blessings with the less fortunate, and strengthen the bonds of community.

Whether you’re preparing a traditional feast or enjoying a simpler celebration, remember that the spirit of Bakrid lies in giving thanks, fostering connections, and finding joy in the company of loved ones. So, embrace the spirit of Eid al-Adha, savor the delectable dishes, and create a Bakrid celebration that is both meaningful and delicious.

Conclusion

Bakrid is a joyous occasion that transcends religious boundaries, bringing together communities in a spirit of love, delicious food, and gratitude to the One Almighty God, Creator of all. The dishes explored above – biryani, kebabs, haleem, sheer khurma, and nihari – are just a taste of the culinary tapestry woven during Bakrid celebrations.

Each dish offers a unique blend of flavors, textures, and cultural significance. From the majestic biryani to the melt-in-your-mouth kebabs, the hearty haleem to the decadent sheer khurma, and the historically rich nihari, these dishes come together to create a vibrant and unforgettable Bakrid feast.

So, this Eid al-Adha, embark on a delicious adventure with your loved ones, savor these traditional culinary delights, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Cocktail Facial: Is this luxurious beauty treatment really good for your skin?

0

Ever wished your skincare routine could be as exciting as that poolside margarita? Well, with a cocktail facial, it kind of can be! This luxurious treatment ditches the tequila for a potent blend of customized ingredients designed to address your specific skin woes.

What’s the Buzz?

Think of a cocktail facial as a bespoke symphony for your face. A skilled esthetician will chat with you about your skin’s current drama – dryness, wrinkles, uneven tone – and then whip up a concoction to tackle them head-on. The treatment starts with a deep cleanse and exfoliation, prepping your skin to soak up the good stuff.

This “good stuff” can be a whole celebrity entourage of ingredients. Hyaluronic acid, the secret weapon behind J.Lo’s ever-youthful glow, acts like a tiny moisture sponge, leaving your skin plump and dewy. Powerful antioxidants fight free radicals, those pesky culprits behind wrinkles, while peptides stimulate collagen production for a firmer, more youthful appearance.

The Benefits: Your Skin Will Thank You

Here’s where the magic truly unfolds:

  • Hydration Hero: Dry skin doesn’t stand a chance against a cocktail facial. Hyaluronic acid and other moisturizing ingredients deeply hydrate, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple – no more tight, uncomfortable feeling!
  • Turning Back Time: Remember that recent article about celebrities and anti-aging treatments? A cocktail facial can be your secret weapon! Antioxidants and peptides work together to minimize fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, giving you a smoother, more youthful appearance.
  • Brightening Up Your Day (and Skin!): Uneven skin tone or dark spots bringing you down? Cocktail facials often incorporate brightening agents like vitamin C, which target hyperpigmentation and give you a more radiant, even-toned complexion.
  • Healing Power: This treatment goes beyond aesthetics. Growth factors and peptides promote cell regeneration, which can actually help heal acne scars, sun damage, or other skin injuries.
  • Truly Tailored: Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, the beauty of a cocktail facial lies in its customization. Whether you’re battling dryness, breakouts, or sensitivity, the ingredients are chosen specifically for your unique needs.

The Verdict: A Luxurious Investment

Cocktail facials offer a holistic approach to skincare, addressing multiple concerns in one luxurious session. While they might not be an everyday indulgence, they’re a fantastic way to pamper yourself and see noticeable results. So, if you’re looking for a way to achieve a more radiant, revitalized you, a cocktail facial might just be the perfect ticket to glowing skin!

Boeing advised airlines to evaluate their B737 Max fleet after one international operator found a bolt with a missing nut during normal maintenance. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is closely monitoring Boeing 737 Max “targetted inspection” for a loose rudder control system bolt.

Boeing advised airlines to evaluate their B737 Max fleet after one international operator found a bolt with a missing nut during normal maintenance. Boeing stated on Friday that the airplane’s issue was resolved. Indian airlines Akasa Air, SpiceJet, and Air India Express operate B737 Max planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it was closely monitoring “targetted inspection,” of Boeing 737 Max planes for a possible loose bolt in the rudder control system on Thursday. “The airplane’s issue was fixed. As a precaution, we encourage operators inspect their 737 MAX planes and report any discoveries “Boeing said.

The aircraft manufacturer alerted the FAA and would update it. SpiceJet and Air India Express did not respond to queries, while Akasa Air said the issue had not affected its operating fleet or aircraft deliveries. Boeing informed us of this issue.

Like all operators worldwide, Akasa will follow the manufacturer or regulator’s checks and procedures in compliance with our highest safety standards “Akasa Air’s spokeswoman stated on Saturday. The airline noted, “our operating fleet and deliveries are not impacted so far.”

The FAA stated Thursday that Boeing has issued a Multi-Operator Message (MOM) advising operators of modern single-aisle airplanes to check rudder tie rods for loose hardware in consultation with it. The FAA said it will communicate with Boeing and airlines during inspections.

Agnikul Cosmos: Meet the IIT Madras grads whose startup is revolutionizing space travel with low-cost 3D rockets

Using 3D technology, Chennai company Agnikul Cosmos is creating low-cost rockets for commercial space missions. Rockets may be made in three days for 6-7 times less than traditional ones.

Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos makes low-cost 3D rockets for commercial space missions. The startup builds rockets 6–7 times cheaper and faster than conventional ones.

Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos produces low-cost 3D rockets for commercial space missions. They build, test, and launch micro and nanosatellite orbital rockets.

Srinath Ravichandran and Moin SPM, IIT Madras alumni, developed the firm to rethink satellite space flight.

Since 2017, they have opened India’s first 3D-printed rocket factory, inaugurated the company’s first private launchpad, and conducted the flying acceptance test of their 3D-printed rocket engine.

Their rocket engines are single-component 3D-printed, making them unique. Joining, welding, and other rocket manufacturing techniques are absent.

“Conventionally making a rocket engine takes six months. With 3D technology, we could create a rocket engine in three days, adds Moin. Agnikul’s rockets are 6–7 times cheaper than traditional rockets.

Several industries will use space as a platform. Opening space yields data. Today, data is the next big thing. With data, you can make smarter decisions, adds Moin.

“Insurance companies are using space data to make loan decisions. Imagine this on a smartphone. A farmer can see his yield likelihood. They can then make informed selections. This will help children understand weather and other elements. That’s the goal, he says.

In a heartfelt note, he wrote, “And the prep begins the beguine… to be back to the people… to be with them in their desires to improve life and living… the opportunity that changes lives… in an hour… my love and regard.”

“Kaun Banega Crorepati” the Indian adaptation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, has long been a household favorite. The show challenges contestants with multiple-choice questions, providing lifelines for assistance, all with the goal of transforming lives.

Amitabh Bachchan has been the face of KBC since its inception, except for Season 3, when Shah Rukh Khan briefly hosted. With his iconic presence and deep connection with the audience, Big B’s return each season is highly anticipated.

Amid recent rumors suggesting that he might step away from KBC, the actor’s public updates have effectively put those speculations to rest.

Ex-Ind Player Calls Rishabh Pant Better Batter Than Adam Gilchrist

0

For years, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has frequently been likened to the legendary Australian Adam Gilchrist. This comparison often stems from Pant’s consistent aggressive approach across all formats and his strong performance behind the stumps.

Gilchrist himself is widely credited with revolutionizing the role of a keeper-batsman in Test cricket through his impactful lower middle-order hitting. With Pant now fulfilling a similar role for India, these comparisons were perhaps inevitable.

However, India’s seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes it’s time to move past simply slotting Pant into the “next Gilchrist” mold, especially concerning his batting. Why? Because Ashwin argues that Pant possesses a high-quality defensive game, a trait he feels Gilchrist lacked.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin elaborated, “He (Pant) is a fabulous player. He is not Adam Gilchrist-many compare him to Gilchrist. He didn’t have such a good defence. Pant has a high-quality defence. He should be compared with some of the best batters, not Gilchrist. Rishabh Pant can do Pant things.”

Ashwin’s statement suggests that Pant’s diverse skill set, particularly his defensive solidity, sets him apart and warrants a broader comparison with top batsmen, rather than just keeper-batsmen of Gilchrist’s mold.

32-Yr Pak Actress Humaira Asghar Ali’s Decomposed Body Found In Karachi Flat

Pakistani actress and model Humaira Asghar Ali, 32, was tragically discovered dead in her apartment in Karachi’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VI on Tuesday, July 8. Her body was found by police in a state of decomposition.

Police officials believe Humaira may have passed away nearly two weeks before her body was found. The discovery was prompted by her landlord, who, unable to reach her and concerned about unpaid rent, sought a court order for eviction. The court directed the Gizri police to visit the apartment in the Ittehad Commercial area. Officers arrived around 3:15 PM and, receiving no response from within, broke into the locked flat, from which a foul odor was emanating.

South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza confirmed in a statement to Pakistani news portal Images, “The apartment was locked from the inside, including the balcony door.” Police reported no immediate signs of foul play at the scene.

Forensic experts from the Crime Scene Unit were called to gather evidence, and Humaira’s body was transported to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for further medical and legal procedures. Dr. Summaiya Syed, a police surgeon at JPMC, noted the advanced state of decomposition and stated, “The cause of death remains reserved.” An investigation is ongoing, with police awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Reports indicate that Humaira had been living alone in the rented apartment and had not paid rent for several months. Police are now attempting to locate her relatives using her mobile phone records.

Humaira Asghar had previously participated in ARY’s reality show Tamasha Ghar and appeared in the 2015 film Jalaibee. Her Instagram bio described her as an actress, model, theatre artist, painter, sculptor, and fitness enthusiast. She had garnered over 713,000 followers on the platform, with her last post, a series of candid photos, shared on September 30, 2024.

Anurag Basu Comes Out In Defense Of Deepika Padukone Amid Spirit Exit Row

The discussion surrounding work-life balance in Bollywood is intensifying, particularly after reports surfaced suggesting Deepika Padukone was dropped from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film Spirit. The reason cited was the rejection of her requests for an eight-hour workday, profit-sharing, and flexibility with language. Now, acclaimed director Anurag Basu has publicly supported Deepika’s call for an eight-hour shift.

In a recent interview, Anurag Basu expressed his agreement, stating, “I also don’t like long-hour shifts at work. My actors never complain about long hours or stress at work. So, I absolutely agree with what Deepika Padukone had to say. It’s a film; I never give my actors a chance to complain about this.”

Basu further elaborated on his filmmaking philosophy, which prioritizes the well-being and creative freedom of his actors. “I want my actors to be very happy on set and know their character well. I don’t give too much information to them before the shoot begins. Let them discover their roles, and this is the method I have been following for ages,” he explained.

This approach highlights a growing sentiment within the industry that values a more balanced and actor-centric production environment.

DYK Shilpa Shirodkar Worked As Hair-Dresser After Leaving Bollywood?

After gracing the silver screen with numerous box-office hits and becoming a beloved figure in the 1990s, actor Shilpa Shirodkar quietly receded from public life following her 2000 film, Gaja Gamini. Her decision stemmed from a desire to embark on a new chapter: marriage, family, and a life far removed from the dazzling world of Bollywood. After exchanging vows with banker Aparesh Ranjit, the couple initially moved to the Netherlands before settling down in New Zealand.

In a recent interview, Shilpa candidly discussed her life after cinema, revealing how she discovered fulfillment in everyday experiences. Reflecting on her years away from the film industry, she shared, “To keep myself busy, I did a hairdressing course in New Zealand. It was something close to my acting career—with makeup and all that. After the course, I worked in a salon for two months.” However, balancing a new marriage with the demanding hours of salon work proved unsustainable. “We were newly married, and the hairdresser job was very demanding. He (husband Aparesh Ranjit) used to get his offs on weekends, and I was expected to work on those same days. We needed time to get to know each other, and I felt like this wasn’t working for me,” she admitted.

What unfolded next seemed straight out of a movie. Determined to try something entirely different, she made an unusual request to her husband. “I told him, ‘Make my resume.’ He asked, ‘What should I put in it?’ I said, ‘Don’t lie—just put the truth, even SSC fail and my film work.’” Without any grand expectations, Shilpa applied for a few positions and, to her astonishment, received not one but two job offers on the very same day. “For fun, I applied to a few jobs, and went for two interviews on the same day. Like a movie scene, I came back with two appointment letters!” she recounted.

She accepted a position as a credit controller at Dun & Bradstreet, and life proceeded smoothly. But not for long. Soon, an unexpected discovery changed everything once again. “I joined as credit controller at Dun & Bradstreet, and one day I told my friend, ‘I feel tired all the time and have acidity.’ She said, ‘You’re pregnant!’ I laughed it off but took a test. When I saw the two lines, I was stunned. My husband was waiting and when I told him, he jumped with joy. Our life changed from that moment,” the actor recalled, her voice filled with emotion.

Despite experiencing health complications during her pregnancy, Shilpa Shirodkar maintained a positive outlook. “I was on insulin three times a day, lost 20 kilos, and smelled like cocoa butter all the time—but it was the best pregnancy ever,” she shared with a smile. Ultimately, she fully embraced motherhood, welcoming her daughter Anushka and choosing to be a hands-on mom.

Made under Titan’s Nebula brand, Jalsa is more than just a wristwatch; it’s a wearable masterpiece that pays homage to regal craftsmanship and the 225th anniversary of the Hawa Mahal, one of Jaipur’s most iconic monuments. Only ten pieces were made, making Jalsa not only Titan’s priciest timepiece to date but also its official entry into the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2025, the most prestigious international watch event.

With the Hawa Mahal in the background, the Jalsa dial is a miniature painting that shows a Rajput ruler riding an elephant under the guidance of a mahout. Each dial was hand-painted using natural gemstone hues on a finely carved piece of marble by Padma Shri recipient Shakir Ali, one of the few surviving masters of Persian-style miniature art.

“The Indian market for high-end timepieces has grown rapidly over the past ten years,” Titan Company Managing Director C.K. Venkataraman told CNBC-TV18.

After experimenting with metal, paper, and wood, Ali decided to use marble for the dial due to its historical significance and ability to retain color brightness. Marble increased the watch’s weight, but each little artwork had minute details that gave each one a unique, one-of-a-kind feel.

Mechanically, Jalsa is a statement of intention. The watch, which was created internally, features a flying tourbillon —a very intricate mechanism previously thought to be reserved for upscale European watchmakers. The dial is framed in 18k rose gold, and the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback displays 14 gems and 144 components. The minute hand features a magnifying glass to provide a closer look at the artwork, and both the hour and minute hands are crafted from sapphire. Maintaining the torque integrity requires careful balancing, which is an engineering marvel.
