Manoj Kumar, the iconic actor and filmmaker revered for his deeply patriotic films, has passed away at the age of 87. While his cinematic legacy remains etched in the hearts of millions, a lesser-known yet powerful testament to his character surfaced nearly a decade ago. In a candid conversation with a leading publication, the actor revealed that he had donated the full monetary prize from his National Award for the 1965 film Shaheed to the family of Bhagat Singh, the revolutionary hero whose story inspired the film.

The celebrated filmmaker had earned his first National Award as a scriptwriter for Shaheed, and again in 1967 for Upkar, another stirring tribute to India and its spirit of selfless service. Reflecting on the recognition he received, Manoj Kumar shared in a 2016 interview, “I donated the entire amount I got for my national award for Shaheed to Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s family. Awards do give any creative person a sense of satisfaction. I am happy that the government has at last rewarded my work.”

Directed by S Ram Sharma, Shaheed is remembered as one of Indian cinema’s most poignant patriotic films. The ensemble cast featured stalwarts like Kamini Kaushal, Pran, Iftekhar, Nirupa Roy, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, and Anwar Hussain, with Manoj Kumar himself in a central role. The film paid homage to the life and sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, resonating deeply with audiences and critics alike.

Through both his cinematic contributions and selfless acts beyond the screen, Manoj Kumar embodied the ideals he so passionately portrayed. His legacy lives on not just in reels of film, but in the hearts he touched with both art and action.
