BCCI Appoints This Former Saurashtra Skipper As Team India’s New Batting Coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering changes to the India men’s cricket team support staff following poor performances against New Zealand at home and Australia away. According to a report, BCCI has appointed  Sitanshu Kotak, the current India A head coach, as the batting coach.

A reliable source mentioned that Kotak’s appointment is being seriously considered and could be finalized before the Champions Trophy in February. The source highlighted the recent struggles of both senior and younger batters as a key reason for the decision to strengthen the team’s batting support staff.

Sitanshu Kotak, a former left-handed batter and former Saurashtra captain, has significant coaching experience. He led India A during their tour of Australia in November 2023 and also coached the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian T20I squad during their Ireland tour in August 2023. In his playing career from the 1992-93 season to 2013, Kotak scored 8061 runs in 130 first-class matches at an average of 41.76, including 15 centuries and 55 fifties.

Post-retirement in 2013, he transitioned to coaching, initially with Saurashtra before becoming a batting coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Over the past four years, he has served as the India A head coach, leading the team on tours to Bangladesh, South Africa, and Australia. He was also the assistant coach of the Gujarat Lions during IPL 2017.

India’s current coaching staff includes head coach Gautam Gambhir, with Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, Morne Morkel as bowling coach, and T Dilip as fielding coach
