Boeing signs “landmark” deal with Air India to create 1 million jobs in US

Boeing and Air India have agreed to acquire 190 B737 MAX, 20 B787, and 10 B777X aircraft for a 220 solid orders totaling USD 34 billion at list price.

President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a phone chat on Tuesday that the “historic” Air India-Boeing contract will create up to 1 million jobs in 44 states in the United States. In announcing the Boeing-Air India transaction on Tuesday, Biden stated that he was looking forward to deepening India-US ties with Prime Minister Modi.

According to a White House release, Boeing and Air India have signed a deal in which the airline would acquire 190 B737 MAX, 20 B787, and 10 B777X aircraft for 220 solid orders totaling USD 34 billion at list price. The agreement also includes customer options for an additional 50 Boeing 737 MAX and 20 Boeing 787 jets, for a total of 290 planes for USD 45.9 billion at list price.

Biden talked with Modi of India on the “historic” accord. This acquisition will sustain over one million American jobs in 44 states, with many of them not requiring a four-year college degree, according to Biden during the call. The Air India purchase is Boeing’s third largest in terms of financial value and second largest in terms of number of aircraft sold.

During the call, the two presidents also underlined the strength of the US-India relationship and pledged to continue working together and in organisations like the Quad to drive economic development and increase trade for our two nations. This news comes on the heels of last month’s first launch of the US-India collaboration on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).

The project aims to broaden the strategic technological collaboration and defence industrial cooperation between the two nations’ governments, corporations, and universities. The iCET was announced by Biden and Modi for May 2022.
