Can ChatGPT-4’s personal narrative generation improve psychotherapy? Know what study says

Two recent experiments found that OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 can generate extremely accurate tailored personal narratives based on stream-of-consciousness thoughts and demographic variables for psychotherapy.

The Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania studied ChatGPT-4’s ability to create personalized personal narratives, which shape identity and help people understand their past and present. Therapists help patients reinterpret these narratives for improved thinking and behavior.

One Journal of Positive Psychology study asked participants to score AI-generated replies. Interestingly, 25 of 26 individuals assessed the AI-generated narratives as mainly or entirely accurate, 19 found them somewhat or very shocking, and 19 learnt something new about themselves.

Professor of Psychology and Positive Psychology Center head Martin Seligman said, “This is a rare moment in the history of scientific psychology: Artificial intelligence now promises much more effective psychotherapy and coaching.”

Stream-of-consciousness ideas like “I’m hungry” and “I’m tired.” were fed to ChatGPT-4 by the researchers.

In another study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology, researchers supplied the AI five “completely accurate” scenarios and requested particular actions. Based on this data, ChatGPT-4 developed credible coaching tactics and interventions.

ChatGPT-4’s ability to create comprehensive personal narratives from 50 stream-of-consciousness ideas and basic demographic information could aid self-insight, according to the researchers. They regard it as a therapeutic supplement, not a therapist substitute.

These findings are intriguing, but the researchers recommend more research and using this technology in coaching and therapy.

Conclusion:-

OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 generates accurate personal narratives from stream-of-consciousness thoughts and demographic data, which could be used in psychotherapy. Two research by the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center examined ChatGPT-4’s potential to construct personalized narratives, which shape identity and help people comprehend their history and present. Therapists help patients reinterpret these narratives for improved thinking and behavior. One study found that 25 of 26 participants assessed the AI-generated responses as mainly or entirely accurate, 19 found the tales surprising, and 19 learnt something new about themselves.

The researchers fed ChatGPT-4 diary-like stream-of-consciousness thoughts and requested particular interventions. Based on this data, ChatGPT-4 developed credible coaching tactics and interventions. ChatGPT-4’s ability to create rich personal narratives from 50 stream-of-consciousness ideas and basic demographic information may be useful for self-insight and complement therapeutic processes, according to the researchers.
