Cyclone “Biparjoy” is projected to travel northward in the next 24 hours, causing severe weather and sea conditions with wind gusts up to 160 kmph. The IMD has warned fishermen to stay out of the water until June 10 in order to safeguard their safety.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that Cyclone “Biparjoy” strengthened into a very severe storm during the course of the previous six hours as it headed roughly northward at a pace of 2 kmph.

The IMD indicated that the cyclone is projected to travel roughly northward in the following 24 hours while maintaining its strength in its most recent advisory released at 9:00 am (IST) on Wednesday. The following three days would see it travel in a north-northwest direction.

The IMD issued a warning for the southwestern states, predicting severe weather and sea conditions with wind gusts up to 160 kmph during the next three to four days. Fishermen have also been warned by the IMD to stay out of the water.

The cyclonic storm had been stationary for three hours as of 2:30 am on June 7 and was located around 900 km to the west-southwest of Goa, 1020 km to the southwest of Mumbai, 1090 km to the south-southwest of Porbandar, and 1380 km to the south of Karachi. Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Lakshadweep’s coastal regions may be impacted.

Several southern states are expected to be affected by Cyclone Biparjoy. In these areas, the IMD has issued a wind warning for the following five days.

On June 7, gale winds with speeds of 80–90 kmph and gusts as high as 100 kmph are predicted to predominate across the Arabian Sea’s east and central regions as well as nearby regions in its west and southeast.

By nightfall, these winds may become stronger and reach speeds of 95-105 kmph with 115 kmph gusts in the same region. The storm is therefore most likely to have an influence on adjacent regions of the west-central and south Arabian Sea, as well as the beaches of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa.

On June 8, the wind is predicted to pick up even more, reaching 115-125 kmph with gusts as high as 140 kmph in the evening. Strong winds will blow across coastal areas of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka.

By June 9, the South Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and the Goa-Maharashtra beaches may experience wind gusts of up to 160 kmph and sustained winds of 135–145 kmph.

Gale winds with speeds between 145 and 155 kmph and gusts as high as 170 kmph are expected across the central Arabian Sea on June 10. Along with the north Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra beaches, the surrounding regions of the south Arabian Sea will also be affected.

Fisherman receive warning from the IMD.

The IMD has warned fishermen to stay out of the water until June 10 in order to safeguard their safety. The shoreline should be visited by any fishermen who are currently at sea.

Fishermen are recommended not to enter the center and adjacent parts of the south Arabian Sea from June 7 to June 9, and the center and adjacent areas of the north and south Arabian Sea on June 10. This advice is found on the IMD’s official website.

On June 6 and 7, fishermen in the Lakshadweep and Maldives regions, as well as those along the beaches of Kerala and Karnataka, should exercise caution. The Konkan, Goa, and Maharashtra coasts should be avoided from June 8 to June 10, according to the IMD.
