From 20k to 150 crores, Jimmy Mistry scaled his business ambitions to new heights.

Jimmy Mistry is one such business entrepreneur, who believed in his calibre. His determination and confidence lead his 20k startup to turn into a business of 140 crores.

Early Background

Jimmy Mistry was pursuing an engineering degree but his lack of interest in the same forced him to leave the course in between. He always dreamt of doing something of his own. He belonged to middle-class Parsi family background and his father was a salesman by profession, for 33 years. In 1991, he sold off his bike to collect Rupee 20k, for his startup business. He entered this entrepreneurial segment by starting a pest control agency.

The business took off nicely. Very soon Jimmy started thinking of diversification and his interest in designing and architecture lead him to start an interior designing firm called The Design Centre in 1993. He didn’t stop there. Although he didn’t possess any formal degree in that field his zeal to learn and on the job learning ability, made him mastered the art. He further extended his business setups into the office furniture space in 1995 with Tecnica Office Systems Pvt Ltd. In Nagpur, he opened a modular office furniture factory.

The way ahead

His organisation set up Italian furniture showroom in Mumbai in 1996, and set up branches at Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai in 1998 and 1999. He likewise set up a branch in Dubai to scale universally. His mastery in extravagance furniture got him numerous turnkey business contracts in 2000, like Project from Star India to reinvent Star news look.  Jimmy kept scaling his business, determinedly. The explanatory moment for Jimmy Mistry came in 2008. He bagged luxury second homes project, which set the foundation for his dream venture Della Adventure Resorts and Spa.

Today, his business organisation has 1,500 employees such as resorts, adventure park, manufacturing, data, and real estates.

Turning Towards Real estate

Jimmy is a foodie and fond of eating in Michelin-starred restaurants all over the world. Hence he wanted to enter into the hospitality business. The chance came with the slump in the economy in 2009. The recession compelled Jimmy to change focus from designing sector to hospitality. He started Della Adventure. His Mumbai-based Della Group of a company is ISO 9001 and 14001 certified for Quality Systems and Environmental Management in 2002.

Jimmy invested Rs 250 crore into his real estate and construction business as he wished to be in the top slot luxury section of signature villas.

Successful experiments

Jimmy turned his attention to the adventure business after the success of signature villas such as  Della Adventure Park which is located in Lonavala near Mumbai. The project boasts facilities such as camp stay, banquets for corporate events, adventure,  and a beautiful locale for a dream destination wedding.

Jimmy Mistry has an altogether, different funds about funding and investments, he says the best way to finance a business is to plough what you earn back into the company. That is the most secured investment one can do is in oneself. 

He is setting up India’s largest galleries of interior products, showcasing every requirement of Interior designing for Office, Homes, Hotels, etc. Jimmy Mistry is also invited as a speaker to talk about ‘Designs’ at numerous respected forums.

This college dropout had proved how determination can turn a small startup into a revenue-generating business of 150 crores. The startup now employs around 2000 employees.
