Mumbai Indians saw their unbeaten run in IPL 2025 come to an end as Gujarat Titans clinched a dramatic last-ball victory at the Wankhede Stadium. The match, riddled with tension, saw MI post a modest 155/8, only for weather and a shifting pitch to make GT’s chase anything but straightforward. Wind and rain threw the players off balance and after a rain interruption, the target was revised to 147 in 19 overs. Gujarat Titans managed to scrape through, winning with just three wickets in hand, securing the win on the very last ball.
The night was far from perfect for either side, with both MI and GT letting chances slip—quite literally. Four catches went down in total, three of them dropped by GT fielders and one crucial chance spilled by MI’s Tilak Varma. Varma’s drop came at a pivotal moment, giving GT skipper Shubman Gill a lifeline when he was on 35. Though Gill could only add five more runs, those proved vital in such a tightly contested match.
Despite the missed opportunity, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya refused to pin the loss on fielding lapses, instead highlighting costly overstepping mistakes. “The catches didn’t really cost us. We were very clinical with that,” Pandya stated after the game. “Maybe definitely with the no-balls, with my no-ball and even the last (over) no-ball. That, in my eyes, indeed it’s a crime, and most often than not it kind of bites you. It definitely did to us, but at the same point of time, really happy with the boys giving their 120% and making sure that we are in the game and not giving up.”
Pandya himself had a rough outing with the ball, conceding 18 runs in one over that included two no-balls. The decisive final over saw Deepak Chahar overstep while defending 15 runs, handing GT an extra run at a crucial moment.
In retrospect, Pandya admitted that Mumbai were short of runs, suggesting they needed at least 20–25 more on the board. Yet, he credited his bowlers for keeping the match alive until the final delivery, a testament to the team’s fighting spirit even in defeat.
