August, the month of sunshine, happiness, and pleasant things, brought us a time to acknowledge and appreciate the young lives around us. August 12, International Youth Day, was an occasion that celebrated their passion, creativity, energy, and enthusiasm, while also bringing awareness to important issues related to youth.
Let’s look at some meaningful ways in which people celebrate this day.
Spreading awareness about UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development and Global Goals – The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Goals was launched by the United Nations in 2015 wherein the world leaders showed their commitment to seventeen global goals to achieve three things- Fight inequality and injustice, end extreme poverty and fix climate change. Youth has incredible power to change the mindset of society and thus can contribute immensely towards these goals.
Empowering Youth to work towards achieving these goals – If we want our youth to lead the way, we need to ensure that they are well-informed about current issues. Simply expecting them to do the needful isn’t enough. We need to educate them about some of the world’s biggest issues and the part they can play in addressing such issues. On International Youth Day, we can hold talks, seminars, and debates on such topics to spread awareness.
Organizing an Event in their Community – In addition, we can organise events within our communities, encouraging youth to step off the sidelines and take charge of a cause. Checking the local newspaper for upcoming activities and events and participating in them enthusiastically. Your help will be much appreciated and you will gain relevant experience to organize such events in future. You will be surprised to know how many people need your help. The smiles on their face will make your day.
Summing up
Each one of us has the power to make a difference. We just have to start somewhere. Remember the adage, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”. So, get up and do something meaningful today.
