The Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor of Maryland, Indian-American Aruna Miller and Wes Moore, have won the state’s gubernatorial contest in the recent midterm elections. As a result of this historic victory, Maryland now has its first Indian-American lieutenant governor and the first South Asian woman to hold that important post in the United States. The state’s first black governor will be Moore, who chose Miller as his running mate in the Democratic primary in 2021.

Miller, a former executive director of Indian American Impact, was endorsed by the group that promotes Indian-American representation at all levels of government in the US, as well as a number of other well-known Indian-American organisations and individuals.

Miller has a long history in politics. From January 2011 until January 2019, he served as a Democratic delegate for District 15 in the Maryland House of Delegates. She ran for the 6th congressional district of Maryland in the 2018 election as well, but David Trone defeated her in the Democratic primary. Miller received the support of Indian American Impact for her election campaign in 2018.

Miller, who was born in Hyderabad, immigrated to the US when she was seven years old, where she spent her formative years. She is a Missouri University of Science and Technology graduate with a BS in civil engineering, and she has worked as a transportation engineer for local governments in California, Virginia, and Hawaii. She relocated to Maryland in 1990 and started working for the Montgomery County Department of Transportation there. She served as the president of the South Asian American Society and a member of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee. In 2018, Maryland women legislators presented her with the legislative champion award.
