Sugar Cosmetics raises $50M in L Catterton’s first Indian deal

0

Sugar Cosmetics has secured $50 million in a new round of funding. The Asia fund of L Catterton led the round in the direct-to-customer brand. Notably, this is L Catterton’s maiden deal in India, after the hiring of Anjana Sasidharan from Sequoia Capital India as head of investments in India and Southeast Asia last year.

SUGAR Cosmetics, a direct-to-consumer business, has secured $50 million in a Series D round headed by L Catterton’s Asia fund. According to sources, the financing was worth close to $500 million. The round was also attended by A91 Partners, Elevation Capital, and India Quotient.

This comes at a time when investment rounds are taking longer to conclude, and businesses have resorted to closing non-core verticals, rationalizing marketing and advertising spending, and going on hiring freezes.

Earlier this month, the media claimed that SUGAR Cosmetics is in discussions to fund more than $50 million at a valuation of $500 million, a 5x increase in a year. The cosmetics company has now raised $85.5 million in total.

Kaushik Mukherjee and Vineeta Singh co-founded the D2C business, which offers lipsticks, eyeliners, face and eye brushes, and has lately moved into the skincare market, selling moisturisers and sheet masks. According to media reports, it presently has an annualised income of around Rs 320-350 crore, or around Rs 27-30 crore in net revenue every month.

The company has also expanded its physical presence, with over 100 owned outlets around the country. Notably, this is L Catterton’s maiden deal in India, after the hiring of Anjana Sasidharan from Sequoia Capital India as head of investments in India and Southeast Asia last year.

SUGAR Cosmetics co-founder Vineeta Singh stated, “We intend to strengthen and extend our three major pillars: distribution, product, and community. Our retail footprint will be strengthened through improving retail marketing and visual merchandising, as well as our product line and distribution. We also want to strengthen our omnichannel strategy by concurrently expanding our distribution channels in India and abroad, as well as building an even stronger foundation on our D2C platforms.”

She continued, “We will also focus on providing high-quality material to continue educating and engaging our SUGAR community across all platforms — digital and otherwise. We will also strategically collaborate with like-minded individuals, IPs, and events. While the path to being one of the Top 3 Makeup brands in India has been incredible, I do anticipate employing more than 10,000 people and going public.”

SUGAR, which was created in 2012, competes with companies such as Mamaearth, Nykaa, Wow Skin Science, and MyGlamm.

While the fundraising scene has cooled, direct-to-consumer (D2C) was one of the hottest investment concepts last year. These businesses, which are popular among millennials and Generation Z, raised more than $2 billion.

Basic sewing and tailoring skills are required for the work, and the company is assisting rural women in learning them. They advise and assist them in their daily lives.

Bunko Junko’s purpose to produce from discarded and recycled materials is geared at environmental preservation and sustainability.

What distinguishes upcycling from recycling?

Upcycling repurposes waste material to generate a new product with a much better value than before. Recycling, on the other hand, repurposes waste material to generate a lower-value product.

Bunko Junko makes things like as home furnishings, clothing, accessories, office stationery, masks, purses, and toys out of textile waste that are more valuable than the original textile. It is a B2C and BCB business model created in 2018 and funded by Indian Oil, Bharat Furnishings, Vivah Borders, Novo Nordisk, Mahalaxmi, Ethnicity, and Nylangan for a total of $96.0k.

Bunko Junko earned a 7 lac grant from Visa in a program in collaboration with IFundWomen through My Chapter One and MoWo Social Initiative. Visa received several applications from organizations in the fashion, healthcare, and food and beverage industries. The winners were determined by a jury vote.

With rising consumption, the company is supporting the concept of upcycling as a foundation for future production. They are launching incredible initiatives like the Darwin Installation and the Kala Ghoda Festival.

Know how Thikedaar is making home construction easier with AI & ML

0

Sujeet K Mishra, the founder of Patna-based real estate digital firm Thikedaar, opted to build the company in his hometown to better understand the local market.

The company now operates in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Bihar, with plans to grow nationally by 2023.

Building a house is no easy task. It entails, among other things, designing, planning, shortlisting and finding materials, and budgeting. The procedure is not only hard, but it also demands a significant amount of time, study, and understanding.

Despite the industry’s disorganization, Sujeet K Mishra and Jenie Singh thought they were up for the job of bringing order to the turmoil. Thikedaar (meaning contractor in Hindi) was founded in May 2020 in Patna, Bihar, with the goal of digitizing and providing openness to the whole pre-construction process, from material selection to payment channels, as well as real-time updates for total transparency.

The site has over 2,700 registered users and 1,40,000 monthly visitors in just two years. According to Sujeet, the site’s user base has increased 450 percent year on year since 2020.

According to Sujeet, “traditional contractors build the majority of India’s individual residences.” The entire procedure becomes extremely difficult due to a lack of expertise.

People have no notion how the whole event will unfold; they are also misled at several points. Most crucially, they rely on semi-skilled contractors, resulting in a costly and time-consuming building process.”

Sujeet, who is from Patna, opted to establish the firm in his hometown to better understand demand and the local market. He is now aiming to transfer the company’s headquarters to New Delhi.

Sujeet explains why: “We have to engage with building materials suppliers directly at their headquarters. It makes managing many things from Patna tough. Delhi is well-connected and simple to get about. We are also having difficulty persuading job seekers from Tier I cities and Tier I colleges to come to Patna and work for us.”

The founders bootstrapped the firm with a $5 million personal savings investment. How does it function?

Although the platform began with the intention of merely delivering a cost estimate, several problems compelled the creators to construct an end-to-end platform. It currently provides architectural and structural suggestions, as well as continuous site monitoring and technical supervision.

“If a client hires us, they choose the building materials, and once they are pleased with the estimate, we oversee the construction process for them,” Sujeet explains.

Customers must pay 0.5 percent of the ultimate building cost to retain the pricing for a set length of time after picking the materials. The remaining money can be paid in installments or as EMIs (equated monthly instalments). Before finalizing any technical drawings, Thikedaar’s algorithm creates rapid construction quotations depending on parameters such as geographical circumstances (soil condition), material selection, building slab area, foundation type, and number of storeys, among others.

Furthermore, the system can forecast when a project will be completed. Sujeet, 27, and Jenie, 24, were classmates at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra during their undergraduate years.

Bimlendra Jha, former CEO and MD of Ambuja Cements and ex-CEO of Tata Steel, later joined them as a director and advisor at Thikedaar. Sujeet worked as a Project Lead and Consultant Architect at Jadooz, an entertainment business, before starting his own.

Later, he worked with Prashant Kishor as a strategist, associate, and analyst (Indian Political Action Committee).

Sujeet explains, “One day, I was sitting in the office, and it occurred to me that there should be a free digital platform where people can check permutations and combinations of construction materials with respect to their construction site and the number of floors, to observe how the construction cost will vary as per their chosen materials.”

Jenie has worked in the marketing departments of companies such as Quick Ride, BYJU’S, and Estel Technologies. Thikedaar has collaborations with a number of publicly traded building material firms.

The startup receives a fee from the firm whenever a consumer selects materials through its platform.

With the listed corporations providing additional discounts to startups in exchange for boosting their brand, the latter may give its clients better prices than the market.

Customers are paid by square foot, with rates ranging from Rs 899 per sqft. to Rs 3,000 per sqft. depending on criteria such as space, floor count, and building material specifications/brand.

According to the creators, the business has assisted in the construction of over 50 residences in Delhi, Pune, and Patna. It is building around 80 residences across Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

Know how Smita Singhal’s startup purifies 1 lac ltrs of sewage water a day

0

The water you use for cooking, washing, and cleaning cannot be drinkable. This article explains how Smita Singhal’s startup, Absolute Water Pvt. Ltd., turns 1 lakh liters of sewage water into purified water per day.

Did you realize that the globe wastes 2 million tons of water every day? It might be due to pollution from industry, agriculture, or human causes, and it takes a long time and a lot of technology to turn it back into pure water.

This results in a lack of filtered water, particularly during the summer. The water we drink includes chemicals and, on sometimes, odors. Because the water used for washing, cooking, and cleaning is unfit for drinking, people employ filters or purifiers to transform this chemical water into clean water.

A water plant, on the other hand, guarantees that the water they supply never needs to be filtered and treated again to make it drinkable. Smita Singhal, a young entrepreneur, says that her firm turns 1 lakh liters of sewage water into pure water every day.

How did Smita Singhal get started on this project?

Smita’s father was a chemical engineer who created and constructed a system that turns sewage water into pure water organically and without the use of chemicals, which may be fed directly from the tap without hesitation or second thought.

Water is filtered using both organic and inorganic processes, including wood chips, sand, and pebbles. Sand filtered water is used for agriculture before being further filtered to produce clean drinking water. It is an entirely green water recovery technique.

Absolute Water Pvt Ltd. adheres to WHO-BIS drinking water standards by investing very little and conducting the operation with inexperienced workforce.

They employ cutting-edge technology to cleanse and recycle waste without damaging the environment. Absolute Water provides water to municipalities, businesses, organizations, and commercial and public assets.

The company’s many goods and services are as follows:

1. Water recovery system: This membrane is particularly developed to filter viruses, dangerous bacteria, pathogens, and other impurities. The sewage water is transported through sand filters to remove solid waste, and then the membrane system guarantees the membranes have a long life.

2. Effluent Treatment Plants: They utilize physio-chemical, biological, and process processes in this procedure. There is a distinction between the anaerobic and aerobic processes in biology.

They make use of a combination of digesters, low-rate anaerobic digesters, upflow anaerobic sludge blankets, membrane bioreactors, and sequential batch reactors.

3. Sulphate removal system: This system was created to address the drawbacks of other sulphate removal technologies, as well as to remove other metals and other characteristics.

It is treated with a low sulphate concentration. Absolute Water has introduced SRS for the first time in the sugar sector.

4. Organic waste to energy plant: This ecologically friendly technology is specifically intended for eliminating high solids. This thermophilic anaerobic method is used to eliminate trash naturally in a cost-effective manner.

5. Bio Filter Green Sewage Treatment Plant: The Biofilter is an eco-friendly organic method of filtering tainted water.

It includes an Ozonator to sterilize the cleaned water.

Only one-fifth of the residual material will be utilised as electricity with zero waste technology.  Smita addressed this issue by giving 100 percent clean natural water and used a recovering procedure.

This compelled her to invest at a modest cost, with basic necessities, and to operate it with untrained staff in order to overcome financial obstacles.

Smita’s next step is to ensure that every individual has the right to pure and clean water. Using three million gallons of 24-hour trash, the AWPL process provides clean drinking water to over 6 lakh inhabitants. Her goal is to broaden her supply to more industrial and residential locations by developing more portable devices and exploring new technologies.

5 top tips to effectively deal with stress

0

Have you ever asked yourself how you should manage stress?. This article has 5 top tips to effectively deal with stress.

Stress is the physiological and psychological response of the body and mind to circumstances that overwhelm them. There are various ways available to help people manage stress and reduce the overall strain of everyday activities.

Because of the fast pace of work and home, being constantly bombarded with technology, and still wanting to communicate with those around us, our lives may feel frantic and stressful at times.

Here are the 5 top tips to effectively deal with stress:

1. Engage in guided meditation

Guided meditation is an effective method for diverting your focus away from the difficulties of daily life. There are several guided meditations accessible on the internet to assist you in finding 5 minutes of concentrated quiet.

2. Practice deep breathing exercises

Deep breathing is a great way to reduce sympathetic nervous system activity, which directs the body’s reaction to a perceived threat. Deep breaths in for five seconds, held for two seconds, and then exhaled for five seconds can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which can help reduce overall tension and anxiety.

3. Maintain your activity and eating habits

Physical exercise and food are two important elements in coping with stress. When your body is healthy, your mind may follow suit, and vice versa.

Physical activity has been found to be a great stress reliever and improve your overall quality of life. Stress can deplete important vitamins such as A, B complex, C, and E, thus nutrition is essential. Maintaining a proper diet benefits not only your body, but also your mind, helping you to deal with stress more effectively.

4. Limit the amount of time you spend on social media

Spending time on social networking sites may be stressful, not just because of what we see, but also because the time you spend there might be better spent conversing with friends, going outdoors and enjoying the weather, or reading a good book.

5. Keep in touch with people

Humans are social beings. You must form relationships with people in order to feel supported.

Finding a sense of community — whether at work, through a religious organization, or through common hobbies such as organized sports — is vital to your well-being. Participating in a similar activity allows you to find support and establish relationships that may be beneficial during difficult times.

When Kiru Maikkapillai quit a well-paying job in the United States to start a business in India, his parents expected him to stay in his field.

But, much to their surprise, he ended up starting a homemade food business in Tamil Nadu. Perhaps they were taken aback since Kiru had aspired to be an entrepreneur since he was a youngster.

After graduating engineering and working for a software firm for a few years, Kiru moved to the United States in 2013 to pursue his MBA at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He eventually worked for an American bank.

When he traveled to India for vacations, he used to plan things and walk about seeking for ideas and sites to start his own business.

But, finally, he realized that it would not work unless he returned to India. As a result, he resigned his job in 2018 and returned to his hometown of Salem. He had wanted to establish a business since he was a child, and he had always wanted to work with agricultural products.

When he stayed in the United States, he saw a lot of ‘Made in India‘ agricultural items of superior quality on the market. He saw a lot of promise in both the Indian and international markets for these items.

Salem is a small town in Tamil Nadu, but he feels it has a lot to offer. He realized it while looking for the perfect component for his company.

Finally, he saw the potential of Salem turmeric, an agricultural crop farmed in his homeland for decades. As a result, he decided to transform it into high-quality, value-added products.

The firm has teamed with a number of local turmeric farmers in Salem to accomplish this. Because they wanted it to be as natural as possible, they only used organic turmeric. As a result, they are procuring turmeric from local farmers directly and aiding them in finding markets. Since December 2019, Kiru’s firm, The Divine Foods, has begun selling its products in India and other nations. Kiru, who founded his firm with the proceeds of a work in the United States, now makes crores.

Turmeric is well-known for its anti-inflammatory effects. It possesses antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial properties, antiseptic properties, and other properties. They are also known to have characteristics that might assist in cancer prevention.

Turmeric-based products have previously been investigated on the market. He argues, however, that the commercialization of things like turmeric powder has made it more difficult for buyers to get the highest quality available. Several firms are now selling adulterated turmeric powder in packets. So he resolved to make a difference by investigating the possibilities of this wonderful spice and, as a consequence, create a market for it.

The turmeric used by Divine Foods is sourced directly from farmers and aids farmers who are suffering from market injustice. He now buys turmeric on a regular basis from a group of roughly 10 growers. The firm presently provides turmeric-based value-added items ranging from organic turmeric powder to turmeric-based rash balm, with costs ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 700 through the business that distributes turmeric-based value-added products.

RBI to introduce India’s own digital currency in phased manner

0

The Reserve Bank of India says it has been studying the advantages and disadvantages of introducing in India a CBDC,  which is a digital form of legal money issued by a central bank. The central bank plans to introduce the CBDC in a phased manner.

The Reserve Bank of India stated in its annual report issued on Friday, May 27, that it will adopt a “gradual approach” to introducing the Central Bank Digital Currency. It said that the design of the central digital coin must be consistent with its monetary policy objectives, financial stability, and the efficient functioning of currency and payment networks. The RBI’s announcement comes months after it stated that it was ready to begin testing and executing CBDC pilot programs.

The Reserve Bank of India is working to introduce India’s own digital currency or the CBDC. The currency must be designed in accordance with the stated objectives of monetary policy, financial stability, and the efficient functioning of currency and payment systems “According to the Reserve Bank of India’s Annual Report on Operations 2022.

“The RBI said this in its annual report, “The Reserve Bank suggests a graded approach to CBDC implementation, progressing step by step through Proof of Concept, pilots, and launch phases.” A proof of concept is an activity in which work is focused on discovering if an idea can be made a reality or to verify that the idea will perform as intended.

The Reserve Bank of India says it has been investigating the benefits and drawbacks of establishing CBDC in India. As a result, the central bank is looking into CBDC design components that can be added with little or no disruption.

According to the RBI’s annual report, “The CBDC was announced in the Union Budget 2022-23, and an applicable change to the RBI Act, 1934, was inserted in the Finance Bill, 2022.” The authorities have enacted the Finance Bill, 2022, laying the legal groundwork for the formation of CBDC.”

A CBDC is a digital form of legal money issued by a central bank that is equivalent to fiat cash and may be traded for it one for one. The only thing that is different is the form.
