A Food Blogger And Full Time Foodie – Kalyan Karmakar

0

There are just a couple of individuals who consider pursuing their visions rather than simply satisfying the duties of existing on the planet. Following your own personal enthusiasm gets troublesome now and again, however, the person who conquers these obstacles, gets the opportunity to achieve what’s he want in life, and internal peace forever. They’re correct when they express ‘Genuine progress lies in doing what you love’ and the journey of Kalyan Karmakar, a Mumbai based Market Researcher turned travel and food blogger, demonstrates the truth of the above expression. Kalyan is an MBA who launched his career as a Market Researcher in Mumbai in the year 1997. He proceeded in his profession as a research analyst for quite a while until hit by a mid-profession emergency in the year 2007.

Before being a Food Blogger

Kalyan has been a foodie for as far back as he can recall. Brought up in England and afterwards in Iran till he was 10, his relationship with western cooking began youthfully. With Indian ingredients, being scant at that point, western food was all he knew until his family moved to Kolkata, West Bengal during the 1980s. This was the place he reconnected with his Bengali roots and Indian legacy. Kalyan’s school and school years were moulded by his local cooking and Calcutta’s flourishing road food culture. However, there was an entirely different universe of food hanging tight for him in Mumbai. At the point when he moved there as an economic researcher, not long after college, Kalyan immediately realised that he was in India’s food capital. Parsi, Mangalorean, Gujarati, and so on, the city has diverse in every respect.

Stepping into a new world

Kalyan is a foodie. He used to talk about foods all the time, so his wife thought of opening a food blog for him in 2007.  The name of the site was www.finelychopped.net, he started food blogging. Till 2012 it remained it as just a hobby but thereafter, kalyan converted it into his full time profession.

It was quite a tough decision on part of  Kalyan, but he believed in the saying that if you don’t have mental peace then, what is the use of such hard-earned money? He soon became a celebrated blogger. He has penned multiple books like The Travelling Belly – Eating, Through India’s By-Lanes etc.
As a Food columnist and blogger his recipes and reviews on his site have earned him lakhs of followers. He is also popular on his self-titled YouTube channel. he was even invited for a radio talk show. He had also written food  columns for Indian Express and NDTV Foods channel. He rouse as an expert voice on all things food.

Road to recovery

Kalyan karmakar was  diagnosed with pre-diabetes some months ago. For sometime he didn’t knew how to deal with his condition when his whole life revolves around food? Kalyan started eating more often at home and experimenting together with his food choices, whether home or outside. He combined more grains, meats and millets into his diet and even began eating vegetables he never liked before. His snacks changed course from ordered-in egg rolls to nuts and fruits. He really started enjoying his journey and he’s proud to mention that he hasn’t had one bad meal since. In Buddhism, they recite of “turning poison into medicine”. He was now in a much better frame of mind to deal with the diagnosis. He understood completely what needed to be done, and took up the challenge to still eat good food. Of course, he changed the way he ate previously , but he still enjoy his meals.

Food is his life

Kalyan Karmakar’s is not just one of the many famous personalities in the Indian blogging zone, but he is a very good example of thinking out of the box and making a hobby into a career which he would never get in his market researcher job. He is always hungry for taste.

“I remember singing at a music reality show, where late Johnson Master said my singing sounded like listening to a Chota Rafi sa’ab.”

Narrating that the epithet isn’t new for him, he says it was acquired soon after he started participating in programmes where Rafi’s songs were part of his repertoire.

The clip, which shows a person singing a song by Mohammed Rafi in a soulful voice, was originally shared by Twitter user Judish Raj.

Raj’s caption detailed that the singer’s name is Saurav Kishan who hails from Kozhikode, Kerala. He also added that Kishan is locally known as Chota Rafi.

The video shows Kishan singing the popular song Teri Aankhon Ke Siva. And, Anand Mahindra is right, his voice is such that it may make you want to hear the song on loop.

But Mohammed Rafi continues to remain my idol,” says Kishan, who is trained in Carnatic as well as Hindustani music. And even today when I pick one of Rafi sa’ab songs to sing, I walk away with multiple lessons in a single song. That is how brilliant his music is!”

So what does the future hold for this Chota Rafi? “I’m busy studying since online classes are going on in full swing. In my free time, I sit and practice at a small makeshift home studio. I aim to make medicine my profession and music my passion,” says Kishan. But, what if a music director asks him to lend his voice to a song? “That is my dream… nothing would be better,” he confesses.

Despite the tough competition in the market both, the sisters decided to pursue the dream of establishing a company and face the challenges. They wanted to establish a handloom sarees business.

Launching a new brand

They launch the brand Suta after doing the deep research and analysis of the saree market. This put their immense creativity in the brand to create super value for the customers. They did not go the conventional way and choose the new method of working with the saree and this creativity worked well. Initially, they did have limited resources only with the capital of 3 lacks rupees and three-person working. At the starting of the business, they could not afford to hire designers and models. Considering this they came with a new idea to establish their brand in the market. They became their models and took the help of digital marketing to make their brand popular.

Tremendous growth in industry

The best part about them is that both were good designers, creative and innovative. These qualities made them very special and helped them to grow in several folds. They initially started the business with just 2 weavers working them but now they have more than 1500 weavers who are working for them in the various own handloom units across India. You will be surprised to know the fact that in 2019 their revenue crosses the 13 crores figure. This business is giving huge employment to the weavers and also improving the quality of the products in several folds. Most consumers prefer them because of their excellent fabric and creativity. The best part is that they have also made it to approach the customers directly and make the product available to them at the least possible price.

Her mother was always working and sweating it out to feed the family which was totally dependent on her income. There was a time when the family had only Rs 1,500 to survive on with nothing to look forward to. Such hardships instilled a sense of responsibility in Aashna from early on and she knew she had to soon be independent and self-sufficient, just like her mom.

Aashna understood the responsibilities she had to take on, fairly early in life. She worked in Euro Kids (pre-school) and went on to complete her course in Early-child education. After getting certified she studied interior designing. After seeing her mom work she wanted to become a set designer and did a course on photography too.

Growing up Aashna was quite introvert, she gained confidence through her career experiences. She is now bold and beautiful.

After opening her online shop, She put in her savings into importing Clothes and Accessories from China. She played around with the clothes and posted them on her Instagram. In fact, She hadn’t even given Blogging a second thought, but some customers nudged her to start a Blog and she did. Her mother was first against the idea of her blogging, she wanted Aashna to completely focus on her online store. But, Aashna managed to balance both blogging and the store perfectly. The first few months were rough and she didn’t really earn enough.

Aashna Shroff herself has gone on record saying that she wants to work with all kinds of brands, and is not partial towards the “Grade A” ones. Her sole aim has been to create relatable content irrespective of the money offered in campaigns.

Because that is how she began and that is exactly how she is going to continue it. Aashna Shroff merely started by posing in the clothes that were sold on the Snob Shop. She has gone on record saying that blogging is simply an extension of your personal life. The diva has always practised what she portrayed.

For a girl who was brought up by a single mother, in a bustling city like Mumbai, was inspired by none other than Blake Lively, someone who is extremely open about her journey-her struggles and most importantly about the people who tried to put her down. Aashna Shroff is the perfect example that there are no limitations in life whatsoever.
