0

Edtech startup Uolo has secured funding of $22.5 million. The open architectural platform of Uolo enables the creation of physical learning programmes for K–12 educational institutions and students.

The UAE-based VC company Winter Capital led a $22.5 million Series-A investment round for the edtech startup Uolo. Existing investors Blume Ventures and the brand-new Dubai-based firm Morphosis Venture Capital both participated in the investment round.

According to a statement made by the firm, Uolo had earlier secured a seed round of INR 20 headed by VC funds Blume Ventures in November 2020.

The fact is that K–12 kids do not have much time left after a few hours of play, relaxation, and required schoolwork, according to Pallav Pandey, CEO of Uolo.

The use of cellphones at home can help the edtech solutions amplify the results on top of the usual six hours spent in class.

Edtech firms are struggling due to high prices and a lack of alignment with schools.”

The open architectural platform of Uolo enables the creation of physical learning programmes for K–12 educational institutions and students. According to the company’s statement, Uolo has worked with more than 8500 schools in India and presently touches over 3.7 million kids.

Winter Capital’s managing director, Anton Farlenkov, stated, “Consumer interest in online education has been demonstrated by the first wave of Indian edtech startups. They lacked an economical distribution, though. We predict that a new generation of edtech businesses will be able to establish organic, inexpensive distribution, enabling students to learn for $10 per year as opposed to $10 per hour. Our trust in this kind of business is the foundation for our investment in Uolo.”

First G20 India development working group meeting to be held in Mumbai

0

The development working group will emphasize the necessity of raising the profile of developing countries in international organizations as part of reformed multilateralism to solve modern issues during India’s G20 leadership.

Officials in India are encouraged by the nation’s capacity to serve as a bridge at a time of conflict within the G20, as it gears up for a summit under its G20 chair that will be essential to protecting the interests of developing nations.

India will use the inaugural meeting of the development working group, scheduled for December 13–16 in Mumbai, to highlight issues that are important to developing nations, according to persons with knowledge of the situation on Sunday.

One of the first working groups to be formed in 2010 is the group, which is a component of the G20’s sherpa track. Over the years, it has also been responsible for some noteworthy outputs.

The fact that all sherpas and heads of delegation, including those from the G7, Russia, and China, attended all the meetings and side events held in Udaipur as part of the first sherpas meeting, which took place from December 4–7, has encouraged officials as they get ready for the upcoming gathering.

The individuals quoted above stated that “they offered their ideas honestly and the talks were quite beneficial as everyone focused on the issues.”

A consensus communique was adopted at the G20 Summit in Bali last month following months of impasse during Indonesia’s G20 chairmanship, but divisions persisted, the persons added. According to the aforementioned person, “all delegates widely praised the progressive movement at the very beginning of India’s presidency.”

According to those with knowledge of the situation, “this underscores India’s aptitude and position to operate as a trusted bridge between different sides of the split, notably between the G7 and Russia and China, as well as between poor countries and advanced economies.”

They claim that India will advocate for an expanded role for the Global South in international decision-making during the development working group meetings, in keeping with the vow made by the Indian leadership to represent the interests of developing countries at the G20.

The development working group would emphasize the necessity of raising the profile of developing countries in international organizations as part of reformed multilateralism to solve modern issues while India holds the G20 chair, the sources stated.

By increasing the visibility of development issues throughout the G20 working streams, India will also concentrate on speeding progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A second person added, “The focus will be on transformative sectors and transitions that can catalyze multiplier effects on all SDGs, such as women-led development, digital transformations, and just green transitions.”

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development depends heavily on financing, yet developing nations have numerous obstacles in this regard.

The Covid-19 pandemic seriously impacted governments’ attempts to reach SDG targets by 2030 by limiting fiscal flexibility, and it is predicted that the financing gap for the SDGs in developing countries grew by 20%.

The second individual added, “During India’s presidency, one of the development working group’s priorities is devising a strategy that would focus on finding methods to securing cheap development funding that will not cage a country.”

The persons stated that the Indian side will also build on its efforts in digital payments, direct benefit transfers, and health by concentrating on data-related capacity-building in developing countries and utilizing “data for development” to speed up progress on the SDGs.

Since the G20’s founding in 2010, the development working group has been in charge of directing its development agenda. Additionally, it has directed this development agenda’s conformity with the SDGs. The group has addressed problems like good infrastructure and financing for sustainable development in addition to working on energy and food security, climate change, and international health catastrophes.

While it lasted, the dream was beautiful: Following Portugal’s World Cup exit, Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence

0

Cristiano Ronaldo, a legendary player for Portugal, shared his feelings on Instagram after his team was eliminated by a tough Moroccan team in the quarterfinals.

The largest and most ambitious dream of my career was to help Portugal win the World Cup. However, putting the name of our nation on the greatest level in the globe was my biggest desire, he wrote on the social media platform. Fortunately, I won numerous trophies of an international scope, including for Portugal.

“I battled for it. For this dream, I battled valiantly. I gave my all in the five World Cup appearances I had during a 16-year period, always playing with outstanding players and with millions of Portuguese fans cheering me on. I simply left everything out there. I never turned away from the battle, and I never stopped believing in that ideal,” he continued.

Since his arrival in Qatar, Ronaldo has been in the center of the maelstrom. Every action he has taken has drawn attention, from his highly publicized departure from Manchester United before the World Cup to his gesture when Fernando Santos substituted him after Portugal’s 1-2 loss to South Korea in the group stages.

When he was benched in a round of 16 encounter against Switzerland, amid rumors that everything was not well between Ronaldo and Santos, things reached a breaking point. Cristiano Ronaldo was once again benched for Portugal’s quarterfinal match against Morocco, which would ultimately be their final World Cup game, despite the Portugal coach denying any such rift.

“Unfortunately, the dream came to an end yesterday. I just want everyone to know that despite all the talk, speculation, and writing, my commitment to Portugal has not wavered in the slightest. Ronaldo said in the Instagram post, “I was always one more person battling for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country.

There isn’t much more to say at this time. Regards, Portugal. Regards, Qatar. While it was happening, the dream was lovely. It’s now time to act as a decent advisor and let everyone to their own conclusions,” he said.

Saira Banu remembers waiting for Dilip Kumar to open his eyes in his final days: “When he did, it was like Eid to me”

0

At the Hero of Heroes festival in Mumbai on Saturday, Saira Banu talked about her late husband, actor Dilip Kumar.

At the Dilip Kumar Hero of Heroes event in Mumbai on Saturday, veteran actor Saira Banu broke down in tears. Dilip Kumar, a legendary actor, celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday with a two-day film festival that was organized by PVR Cinemas, INOX, and Film Heritage Foundation.

Saira broke down in tears when speaking about Dilip at the inaugural ceremony on Saturday. She said, “Aisa lagta hai mujhe ke karwat lekar so rahe hain mere paas,” referring to his last moments. I have the impression that he is still curled up next to me, his face turned to the other side. He used to sleep for extended periods of time when he was sick in the recent past. And being the woman I still am in love with him, I would always naturally remain by his side. When he opened his eyes, it was a holiday for me; it was Eid.

She continued, “He would turn around, look at me with those lovely, piercing eyes and the most beautiful grin and say, ‘Saira, abhi tak yahan baithi ho (You are still sitting here)’.” I would respond, “Yes of course, abhi tak baithi hu aapke liye ki aapki aankh khule, aapke face pe, aapke jism pe koi harkat ho. Jab aap sote hai, ye duniya bahut khamosh hojati hai, pointless hojati hai mere liye. Lekin jab aap jaagte ho, is duniya mein harkat aajati hai log chalne phirne lagte hain (Yes, of course I’m still sitting for you so I can see you open your eyes and move. The world loses all meaning for me while you’re asleep. However, after you awaken, people begin to move once more.

Aan (1952), Devdas (1955), Ram Aur Shyam (1967), and Shakti (1982), among other critically acclaimed films by Kumar, will be shown during the nationwide film gala, which is being held in collaboration with PVR Cinemas, in over 30 theaters and 20 towns. Meet Mamoon Akhtar: A tuition teacher who built one of world’s top 10 school

0

In West Bengal, Mamoon Akhtar founded the Samaritan Mission School. Today, regardless of faith or creed, they offer inexpensive education to over 6,500 students.

When he was studying in class seven, Mamoon Akhtar, was told: “You are not permitted to take the exam if you are unable to pay the cost.”

After hearing these remarks Mamoon carried the hurt of being ostracised but made the decision to take action. The young man who had formerly been turned away and denied education turned his life around for the betterment  of others.

Mamoon Akhtar, who later became a tution teacher, founded Samaritan Mission School. Mamoon, 48, has founded a chain of four schools in West Bengal that have more than 6,000 pupils enrolled. Samaritan Mission School is the name given to the organisation by Mamoon.

He says, “There is no room for religion in my school, which looks beyond your faith.”

Mamoon, who was up in the West Bengali city of Howrah’s Tikiapara neighbourhood, loved attending to school and was also a decent student. Despite dropping out, he was a persistent individual who continued to learn with the aid of a tutor and took his class 10 and 12 exams as a private candidate.

His English-medium schools now boast of educating over 6,500 kids from preschool to high school. An army of about 250 extremely committed instructors is responsible for all of this. The day after being ordered to leave the school, Mamoon began giving lessons to children in the nursery through class one.

He says, “Finding a means to give pupils from disadvantaged circumstances a high-quality English education has become my life’s work. I did not want another youngster to experience the same suffering as I experienced.  I was raised in an area with a high crime rate.”

The guy told Mamoon to go and mind his own business when he tried to assist the woman and intervened.

Mamoon says, “Nevertheless, I rescued the woman, who subsequently revealed to me that the male had been pressuring her into working in the drug trade. A little child who subsequently revealed himself to be the son of the woman I helped informed me that he wanted to go to school but lacked the resources to do so. I urged him to come to my place the next day and informed him that I would help him if he chose to pursue his academic goals at the time. The little youngster soon arrived at my home the next morning with a desire to study, the author writes. That was the start of my career as an educator.”

Mamoon moved into a 300 square foot area next to his home in Tikiapara in 2001 since he had six young sons who wanted to study there. In order to make sure that the kids and their parents respected the education they were receiving, he used to charge Rs 5 each kid.

He focused on providing the kids with a solid education. Mamoon claims that he frequently finds himself at the right place at the right moment in life.

Mamoon adds, “Another occurrence that can best be characterised as incidental occurred in 2003 when I came upon a newspaper item about the wife of the then-U.S. Consulate providing assistance to local organisations. When I replied to her, Lee Alison Sibley, the wife of the US Consulate, surprised me by sending me Rs 10,000.”

This provided him the push he sorely needed. The funds were used to construct a roof and restrooms for the kids.

Along with the contribution, she also assisted in having an article titled “Service based on need, not creed” published in Asian Age.

Mamoon was able to acquire some furnishings and fix the classroom windows and doors thanks to this. An association that was established in the early 2000s is still active today.

Mamoon explains, “Ramesh ji, who is now over 80 years old, is still committed to helping our cause. He is my mentor, and he has helped me and led me as a father would at every turn.”

Mamoon was able to purchase a larger plot of land where he constructed the first school thanks to donations that he received from all across India.” The school building was constructed and ready by 2008. They began by signing up children for kindergarten through third grade.

Mamoon took yet another significant step to expand and improve the school in 2014.

“The Belilious Trust Estate, which was approximately 150 years old and completely occupied by the neighbourhood thugs and drug mafia, had an empty block of land in Tikiapara. We were able to secure that two-acre site for our usage thanks to the assistance of the entire neighbourhood and the Howrah municipal police.”

The school was recognised by the West Bengal Board eight years later, in 2016. A study organisation headquartered in the United Kingdom named Samaritan Mission School among the top 10 inspiring schools in the world in 2022, giving it even another accomplishment.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, expressed her congratulations to Mamoon and the crew in honour of this achievement.

For the kids, who frequently came from damaged homes, the school provided a safe haven. Some of the children have moms who are engaged in drug dealing or other criminal activity, while others have fathers who are incarcerated.

“They desired to pursue education and build a successful future. Along with the school, Mamoon also contributed to the construction of a primary healthcare facility and a vocational training facility where more than 400 women are employed.”

We established the vocational training centre to assist the ladies in securing a living. This has also assisted in reducing crime and domestic abuse cases in the neighbourhood, according to him.

The four kids of Mamoon—three girls and one boy—attend the Samaritan Mission school as well.

He claims, “Educating all the youngsters and letting them fly high is my main ambition for all of them.”

Know how IntrCity SmartBus is enhancing bus traveler’s experience

0

IntrCity SmartBus, a smart bus reservation platform located in Noida, seeks to enhance the client experience. The company was started by Kapil Raizada and Manish Rathi, who once worked on RailYatri, a travel website that enables users to purchase rail tickets.

Over the years, participants in the bus aggregation market have attempted to make sense of a disorganised landscape, with most platforms concentrating on making ticket purchasing simpler. IntrCity SmartBus, a Noida-based platform for booking smart buses, goes above and beyond by enhancing the total client experience.

The creators of IntrCity, Kapil Raizada and Manish Rathi, did not start their entrepreneurial experience with the creation of IntrCity. They collaborated on RailYatri, a travel website that enables users to purchase rail tickets, in 2012.

According to IntrCity SmartBus co-founder Kapil Raizada, “At first, we thought that the major issue with rail travel was that passengers were having trouble finding a seat on the trains they wanted to use. The main reason we created the RailYatri app was to assist users in finding trains with seats.”

After leaving their prior jobs, Kapil and Manish began their entrepreneurial career with this issue statement.

In 2013, the pair released the RailYatri app, and from 2014 to 2017, the business concentrated on selling rail tickets.

“After finding a solution, the RailYatri team realised it could add one more tool to deal with the waiting list issue—show consumers the available bus tickets for the routes they have planned to go. We attempted to sell bus tickets to train passengers who were on the queue but discovered it was difficult,”,  he added.

He further said that some people would even put off their travel plans rather than use the bus. Additional study revealed that most travellers lacked confidence in buses, particularly when it came to factors like sanitization and safety.

The business created its own solution—IntrCity SmartBus—in 2019 as a result of this finding.

Kapil said, “We have developed a full stack technology platform that supervises and regulates all bus operations, including the cleanliness, hygienic conditions, route, and speed of the buses. To make sure that some of the fundamental promises of travel, such as safety, dependability, and punctuality, are consistently met, we have invested in training the IntrCity SmartBus crew and have built a telematics connected plus platform where they get a lot of data about the vehicle throughout the journey.”

IntrCity SmartBus uses GPS and telematics to create a more reliable experience. Additionally, there are restrooms and call centres on IntrCity SmartBus.

Over 250 buses are being run by IntrCity SmartBus in 750 Indian towns. The company is now operationally profitable.

Kapil claims that IntrCity SmartBus expanded two times last year and would increase three times this year, with just an annualised run rate of more than $50 million. The firm expects to experience a 15X to 20X rise in sales during the following three years.

“We’ve already collected data for seven to eight months. So, based on the trend line, I am rather certain that we will have revenue increase of roughly 300% every year,” according to Kapil.

The business predicts that by the end of 2022, intercity transportation will surpass the pre-COVID level of 50 million daily travellers.

After establishing a foothold, Kapil says, “we are now essentially focusing on trying to see how we can expand and make the product available to more people in more places while enhancing the experience by introducing additional tools.”

PT Usha will be elected as the First Female President of the IOA

0

The illustrious PT Usha will be formally elected as the first female president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) during the elections held by the governing body on Saturday, ushering in a new era in the nation’s sports administration.

The 58-year-old Usha, a multiple Asian Games gold medalist and fourth-place finisher in the Olympic 400-meter hurdles final in 1984 in Los Angeles, will be proclaimed elected without opposition for the top position in the elections being run under the direction of retired SC judge L Nageswara Rao, who was appointed by the Supreme Court.

Usha’s promotion to the top position will also signal the conclusion of the protracted problem in the divided IOA, which has been threatened with suspension by the International Olympic Committee if elections, which were initially scheduled for December last year, are not held this month.

Four ordinary members of the executive council, four joint secretaries, and 77 members of the electoral college will be elected at the elections.

For the position of joint secretary (female), Alaknanda Ashok of the Badminton Association of India and Suman Kaushik of the Netball Federation of India are squarely in competition. Out of the eight contenders, the electorate will select four members for the executive council.

Amitabh Sharma, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, Cyrus Poncha, Harjinder Singh, Harpal Singh, Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Rohit Rajpal, and Vitthal Shirgaonkar are the eight contestants.

Usha, a legendary track and field athlete, will have a completely new set of responsibilities because she has never held a position of authority before. She now serves as the Athletics Federation of India’s junior selection committee chair. She has also participated in the numerous national honors committees that the government has established throughout the years.

Usha, affectionately known as the “Payyoli Express,” is thought to be a contender for the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, which had nominated her as a Rajya Sabha member in July.

She will also add another feather to her crown as the first Olympian and first international medalist to lead the IOA in its 95-year history after dominating Indian and Asian athletics for two decades before retiring in 2000 with a collection of international medals.

Since Maharaja Yadavindra Singh played in a Test match in 1934, Usha is the first athlete to have represented the nation while also leading the IOA. Between 1938 and 1960, Singh served as the third IOA president.

Ajay Patel of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will be chosen without opposition as senior vice-president. Gagan Narang, an Olympic medalist in shooting, and Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, the head of the Rowing Federation of India, will also be elected without opposition as vice presidents.

Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF), will hold the position of treasurer because no one else applied. Kalyan Chaubey, the head of the All India Football Federation and a former goalie, will be chosen without opposition as the joint secretary (male).

Yogeshwar Dutt, an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, and Dola Banerjee, a female archer, will represent the eight Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit on the executive council, respectively (SOM).

Four candidates for the executive council members and one female contender for vice president withdrew from the race earlier. High-profile politicians including Union Minister Arjun Munda, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and BJP Member of Parliament Brijbhushan Sharan Singh are anticipated to participate in the voting process.

Along with Usha, Gagan Narang, and Yogeshwar Dutt, other prominent politicians from the past and present of the nation, such as Sakshi Malik, PV Sindhu, MM Somaya, and Akhil Kumar, will also vote.

The new executive council will also be very different from the previous ones. This is the first time in IOA history that at least five of the 14 executive council members will be former athletes, including Nita Ambani, an IOC member from India. From the previous IOA executive council, only Sahdev Yadav and Rajlaxmi Singh Deo are still in the top position.

Following approval from the international committee, the IOA accepted the revised constitution written by judge Rao on November 10. The 77-person electoral college is made up of 66 members from 33 National Sports Federations, each of which nominated one male and one female, eight SOMs (four male and four female), two members of the Athletes Commission (one male and one female), and Nita Ambani, an IOC member from India.

Additionally, there are 39 more female members of the IOA electoral college than male ones (38). Due to an ongoing issue in the Delhi High Court, where a petition was filed to alter the IOA’s constitution before holding elections in order to bring it into compliance with the National Sports Code, the elections that were scheduled to take place in December of last year were unable to take place. Justice (retired) Rao was subsequently chosen by the Supreme Court to write the constitution and oversee election administration. The IOC acknowledged the “substantial progress” the IOA has made in resolving its governance difficulties on Tuesday, but stated that it will not make a decision to lift the warning for a ban until the elections process is complete.
