India getting closer to winning WTC finals ticket; but Australia is still waiting

0

India still needs two more victories in the series’ next three Tests to secure a spot in the WTC final.

India’s innings and 132-run victory over Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Nagpur on Saturday moved them closer to a second World Test Championship (WTC) final berth, while the Pat Cummins-led side’s quest for a title round position was extended.

Following the victory by the Indian spin-bowling duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, No. 2 India currently has 61.67 percentage points to No. 1 Australia’s 70.83.

However, India still needs two more victories in the series’ next three Tests to ensure a minimum points percentage of 62.50, which would effectively eliminate third-placed Sri Lanka from contention.

If India wins the next three matches in the series, they will have a best possible percentage of 68.06.

While India’s innings victory extended Australia’s wait in the WTC final race, it also ended England and the West Indies’ chances of winning a spot in the Test championship’s 2021-23 cycle.

Australia still has a big enough lead to make the World Cup final, but an 0-4 defeat to India may put third-placed Sri Lanka back in contention, since the Islanders have a two-match Test series against New Zealand starting next week.

In the case that Rohit Sharma’s team wins the series, Australia’s points percentage will fall to 59.64. If Sri Lanka wins both Tests against New Zealand, their points percentage will rise to 61.1, which will be enough to push them past Australia and into the WTC final.

However, Sri Lanka will be better served if Australia goes unbeaten in at least two of the following three Tests, since a 2-0 win for India would only bring India’s points percentage to 60.64.

Sri Lanka may then surpass that by sweeping the two-match Test series against New Zealand and leapfrogging India to secure a WTC summit battle versus Australia.

However, given the Indian spinners’ heroics in the first Test in Nagpur and the playing conditions predicted to favour the hosts, it’s unlikely Rohit’s team would be satisfied with only two victories.

South Africa will host the West Indies in February-March, but even a sweep may not be enough depending on Sri Lanka’s performance in New Zealand and the outcome of the India-Australia series.

US-based Datta Patil became real-life hero by spending lakhs to solve water scarcity in his hometown

0

Datta Patil, a US-based engineer, rehabilitated his drought-stricken hometown. Halgara village in Maharashtra currently has a water storage capacity of more than 200 billion litres.

Do you recall the award-winning film Swades? A scene from the film has played out in Halgara, a small hamlet in Maharashtra’s Latur district.

Datta Patil, an engineer living in the United States, grew raised in Halgara. He attended the village’s government school through the 10th grade. He went on to further his education outside of the town and finally landed a position with one of the top multinational corporations in the United States.

Datta never lost his roots, even after relocating to the United States. Once a year, he travelled to India to see his family and hometown. It was on one of these visits to the village that he realised it was no longer the place he had grown up in.

At the time, the community was suffering severe water scarcity and had to rely on trains carrying water tankers for drinking water.

Datta returned to the United States and began looking for answers to the problem. He reasoned that it was the village’s abnormally low groundwater level, which was then at 800 feet, that was causing water shortages.

His next plan of action was to assist the people in collecting rainwater to replenish the groundwater table. He spent over Rs 3 lakh of his own money to begin watershed efforts in the community.

As part of his efforts, a 20-kilometer canal was desilted, as well as 20 recharge wells and 26 check dams. Datta has spent over Rs 22 lakh on this endeavour as his own contribution to date. In addition, he persuaded his company, Yahoo USA, to sponsor this campaign to revitalise the community.

As a result, Halgara was turned into a model hamlet with a water storage capacity of more than 200 crore litres.

Netizens shocked as Shubman Gill ousted from Team India’s playing XI

0

Despite his excellent form recently, Shubman Gill was unable to break into the starting XI against Australia in the first Test.

With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy got started at Nagpur’s VCA Stadium, the Indian team management took the painful choice to bench Shubman Gill for the first Test. Given his recent form, several older players backed Gill to open the batting alongside skipper Rohit Sharma.

Gill was a member of Team India’s previous Test squad when they faced Bangladesh, and the 23-year-old even achieved his maiden Test tonne; nevertheless, despite his outstanding form, Team India has opted to go with KL Rahul as their opener with Rohit Sharma.

Gill is still aiming to break into the Test team, having played 13 matches and scoring 736 runs with one century and four fifties. The Fazilka-born player’s recent form was one of the main reasons he was anticipated to start the first Test.

Gill has lately impressed with his success in white-ball forms, making a century in T20I cricket when India faced New Zealand in the third game of a three-match series. Against the Black Caps, Gill hit a brilliant 126* off 63 balls as India easily won the game.

Aside from KL Rahul’s comeback, Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat have also been given Test debuts. Suryakumar has been added to the roster since team India is without the services of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant owing to injury. Todd Murphy, a 22-year-old off break bowler, also made his Test debut for Australia.

Fans flocked to Twitter to voice their disappointment after Gill was left out of the starting XI. Due to his dismal form, many argued against include Vice-Captain KL Rahul in the team. Rahul last appeared in a Test series against Bangladesh, when he had the top score of 23 in four innings.

Job prospects in the EV industry are expanding, women are rising to the top

0

EVs and eMaaS are playing an important role in alleviating the country’s low female labour force participation by providing women with opportunities to grow and attain financial independence.

The labour force participation rate (LFPR) in India is now about 40%. In LFPR, we have the unpleasant distinction of being in the lowest percentile of established and emerging economies, ranking behind nations like Sri Lanka, Rwanda, and even North Korea. Clearly, this is not good for the country’s image, and given that we currently preside over the famous G20 forum, our LFPR, which is the lowest among G20 countries, has an influence on our standing among the member countries.

Reasons for poor LFPR

In India, the low women’s LFPR has maintained at 19.23% in 2021, down from 24.51% a decade before. According to experts, this is due to a lack of an effective, inexpensive, and efficient transportation medium that ensures a woman’s mobility in a safe and secure manner. This is harming the country’s overall prospects and bringing it down in this critical metric of labour participation.

Electric vehicles and eMaaS: A panacea for low LFPR?

Electric Vehicles (EVs), and especially Electric Mobility as a Service (eMaaS), play a significant role in tackling this issue. Training, accessibility, financing, and improving livelihoods via increased earning potential are the primary issues that a full eMaaS solution untangles for a woman looking to enter the workforce.

Orientation and training

For starters, women are not even trained to ride eBikes. Early on, collaborative efforts were undertaken in collaboration with socially committed organisations such as the Azad Foundation in New Delhi and MoWo Social Initiatives in Hyderabad, both of which are on a mission to put millions of women in the driver’s seat so that they can achieve economic prosperity and social mobility through electric vehicles. During these efforts, women were given eBikes, which was a first step towards guaranteeing that an entrance point for women to enter the gig or general employment is developed.

The Ease of Access

The most crucial elements in this article are that women confront a shortage of access to eBikes in many regions of the country owing to a lack of financial resources and socioeconomic characteristics. Furthermore, women who live in particular ‘pin codes’ in rural areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states are automatically tagged as ‘negative’ when banks, financial institutions, and other non-banking financial companies provide lending facilities (NBFCs).

Subscription Finance Provides Access to Finance

Women should not be discouraged from working because they lack financial resources. According to research, selling eBikes for a weekly, biweekly, or monthly subscription can assist overcome this accessibility issue. EV companies should also ensure that there are no delays in processing orders and that eBikes are ready within 24-48 working hours. Furthermore, the lack of a lock-in period gives women consumers more options and instills them with a new feeling of pride and independence.

Pride and Liberty

Through eMaaS, women have access to mobility and new-age EVs, which is a freeing and proud experience for them. This is especially true in traditional settings and societies where women are more linked with housework and childrearing. Women are increasingly embracing eBikes for commuting and other activities, allowing them to pursue new pathways of growth and opportunity in their lives.

The Function of Safety

EVs’ high safety and security features, such as being tracked at all times and sharing their whereabouts with family members, are assisting women in achieving equal possibilities. This gives women a sense of protection and security, allowing them to pursue possibilities.

Women’s Empowerment through eMaaS Business Model

Players in the EV industry must focus on eMaaS as the foundation of their business strategy, and secure preferential allotment of female riders to offer products and services to certain client segments. In the pharmacy business, for example, elderly persons purchasing medicine online feel safer if a woman rider delivers to their house, and pharmacies increase their image by delivering through women riders.

eMaaS and Women: Commitment to a Cause

EVs have long been associated with high-income families, but thanks to creative adoption models, they are also beginning to empower women in society. The eMaaS business must step up its efforts to broaden its reach and accessibility to women across the board. Administrators and lawmakers may also help by providing open and productive policy frameworks. Companies that provide cheap electric transportation to women should receive tax and duty concessions, as well as priority sector credit. This has the potential to generate equitable job possibilities for women in a variety of industries and enterprises.

India VS Australia: What’s so great about the Nagpur Pitch?

0

On the eve of the first Border-Gavaskar Test, accusations of pitch doctoring and rebuttals to those accusations dominate the debate.

Surface tensions appear to emerge practically every time India hosts a significant Test series – Nagpur 2015, Pune 2017 and Ahmedabad 2021 are three recent instances of matches that became characterised by the pitches on which they were played. Nagpur 2023 is now a definite possibility, with accusations of pitch doctoring, and rebuttals to those accusations, dominating debates on conventional, electronic, and social media on the eve of the first Border-Gavaskar Test, which begins on Thursday. You’ve come to the correct spot if you’re wondering why.

What’s the big deal about Nagpur’s pitch?

To begin with, it appears strange, with the majority of the pitch being pretty well-watered, with a scattering of grass and two strongly delineated barren sections.

In summary, left-handed batsmen are expected to struggle in Nagpur, particularly in the second innings, and especially when left-arm orthodox spinners place the ball in those rough spots beyond their off stump.

On Thursday, Australia’s lineup is set to have an unusually large number of left-handed batters. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, both left-arm orthodox spinners, are slated to lead India’s assault. On the other hand, right-handed hitters will dominate India’s lineup.

Australia has one left-arm orthodox spinner in their team, Agar, but it’s unclear if he’ll play. And, with Mitchell Starc out injured and Jaydev Unadkat unlikely to play, there won’t be any fast bowlers delivering from left-arm over to generate a substantial rough area outside the right-handers’ off stump during the game. Of course, there will be some left-arm spin from over the wicket, as well as some right-arm speed from around the wicket.

Meanwhile, India’s offspinner R Ashwin would most likely bowl against Australia’s left-handers. The pitch appears to have been created with the sole goal of maximising India’s home advantage in mind.

So far, Australia skipper Pat Cummins has maintained a diplomatic front, avoiding to engage in open criticism of the pitch. India skipper Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, was asked to reply to a narrative in the Australian press that had referred to the pitch as “doctored”.

It’s unusual for a team to have so many left-handers, therefore it’s probable that no team has ever had the opportunity to request a pitch like this before, presuming India did. Every team strives to take advantage of home field advantage.

When India travels outside of Asia, Ashwin and Jadeja seldom get to play together – wickets in England, South Africa, and New Zealand have tended to be extensively grassed and skewed towards fast bowling on all of India’s previous tours of those nations.

Meanwhile, Indian Test fields have earned a reputation for greatly favouring spinners in recent years, although India has also played a lot of home Tests on sports pitches. However, India appears to have returned to pitches that turn from the start.

Now, ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series, India must win at least three Tests to secure a spot in the 2023 World Cup final. Thus, the pressure of WTC points may result in a global increase in pitches that exaggerate home advantage.
